During their regularly scheduled meeting Monday night, the Waco City Council approved their budget and approved a motion to apply for a maintenance grant through the state.

As part of their budget approval, the council approved two funds: the water and general. For the water fund, the council approved a budget of $301,150 in revenue and $301,116 in expenses. For the general fund, the council approved a budget of $225,900 in both expenses and revenues.

In other news, Councilman Doug Brock informed the council that the city is eligible to receive funds from the state’s Local Maintenance Improvement Grant (LMIG). The grant requires a 30 percent match; therefore, of the $10,000 worth of projects the city would be allowed to slate for work, the state would pay $7,000, while the city would be responsible for $3,000.

Brock said he had identified four projects to outline and send to the state in their application:

• Sidewalk and sink hole repairs on Atlantic Ave.

• Resurfacing the road on Commercial Avenue from Highway 78 to Atlantic Ave.

• Repairing holes on Atlantic Avenue North.

• Repairing cuts on the street made when new gas lines were put in.

Brock had also, during a previous meeting, requested $5,000 for the Waco Fire Department to pay for three new sets of turnout gear for firefighters. After reviewing the budget, the council approved the funds. Brock said the new suits should arrive in four weeks.

The council also approved a motion to donate $100 to the Haralson County Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Academy.

The council was visited by B.J. Brock and G.W. Rogers, who sit on the leadership committee for the Chamber. They updated the council on the Leadership Academy’s activities for the year.

“We have the academy every other year,” said Rogers, “but during the off years, we have seminars for our graduates that are also open to the public.”

The first seminar will be held at 6 p.m. March 26 and taught by Michelle Darby and Dan Klien at West Georgia Technical College. Their topic will be “Creative Collaborations: A Fresh Approach to Leading Haralson County.”

Brock and Rogers thanked the council for their support.

Lastly, the council discussed extending an invitation to newly elected Haralson County Commissioner John Dobbs, who represents Waco as part of his district on the board, to attend their meetings.

The next Waco City Council meeting will be held at 7 p.m. March 4.
