A roofing repair “hot spot” may have been the cause of a Friday afternoon fire that destroyed a building due to be reopened soon as a pistol firing range, according to owner Robbie Robinson.
Robinson said roofing crews had completed work on the building at 5840 Bankhead Highway around 3:30 p.m. The blaze was reported to 911 officials about 4:15 p.m. The building has been vacant for sometime, but Robinson said a company was renovating it and planning to open a new state-of-the-art firing range. The building had been the home of JDBR Full Auto Training Center and Pistol Range before closing.
“At this time, the cause of the fire is still under investigation,” Deputy Fire Chief Kim Ransom said Monday afternoon. She said the investigation may be completed by Friday.
About a dozen county fire units answered the alarm and found the building fully consumed by flames.
No injuries were reported, but fire crews were swapped out every 10 minutes to prevent heat exhaustion in the 90-plus degree weather, said Wes Tallon, county communications and community relations director.
Traffic was closed along the busy highway Friday afternoon as firemen battled the blaze.
