The Douglasville City Council Wednesday at a special 7:30 p.m. meeting will vote to authorize the submission of a request to the Georgia Department of Transportation for a traffic signal on Fairburn Road in front of the planned public safety and municipal court building.

“The cost for planning, engineering and purchase of equipment for this project will be part of the overall public safety building project,” said City Manager Bill Osborne, adding that these costs will be covered by the city’s $23 million general obligation bond for construction of the new police facility.

In other business, the council will vote on two separate sponsorship agreements with GreyStone Power and Gas South concerning the contribution of funds for the July 4 fireworks display at West Pines golf course.

Osborne said GreyStone and Gas South have both volunteered to split the $11,500 owed by the city to Atlanta Pyrotechnics to prevent the display from being cancelled due to the economy.

“We’re appreciative to both of these organizations for making sure our citizens will get to see fireworks on Independence Day,” Osborne said.

Following the special-called meeting will be a legislative work session, which is being held a day early because of the upcoming holiday weekend.

The work session agenda includes discussion of a potential citywide special election Nov. 3 for a tax allocation districts (TAD) referendum.

I can't believe that when this country is in the

middle of the biggest recession since the Great

Depression that the city fathers would even

consider asking the voters to approve a TAD

that would raise property taxes.
