Authorities have added to the number of alleged victims in the case against the Carrollton oral surgeon who is accused of striking patients, including at least two after undergoing oral surgery.
Gordon Trent Austin was indicted by a Carroll County grand jury in June on more charges, which include aggravated assault, two counts of cruelty to children and three counts of simple battery, according to the indictments.
In March 2008, Austin was indicted in Carroll County for nine counts of simple battery, two counts of aggravated assault and one count of first degree cruelty to children.
According to the indictments, the incidents occurred possibly as early as 2004 and continued until 2007. Several patients allege they were struck with what was described as a metal object, possibly a dental elevator, which is a dental tool used to extract teeth.
In the June indictments, Austin is accused of striking one man on his hand and head with a dental elevator and a third time on the victim’s head using his hand.
Austin practiced dentistry in Carrollton for many years before his April 17, 2008, arrest, at which time he turned himself in and was released on bond the same day.
Carroll County District Attorney Pete Skandalakis said a trial for the dentist has been scheduled for September.
Skandalakis said at least seven alleged victims have been identified in the case, and the most recent indictments resulted from investigators identifying additional people believed to have been victims.
According to the June indictments, Austin is accused of slapping a girl, who was under the age of 18, on the head during surgery. Another girl, who was also under 18, was allegedly struck by Austin with a metal object, causing her head to swell, according to the indictment.
Authorities said Austin is also under investigation by the Attorney General’s Office for possible Medicaid fraud.
Skandalakis said prosecutors won an appeal in the state’s Court of Appeals this year to reinstate charges that had originally been dismissed after a motion was granted by Carroll County Superior Court Judge John Simpson in November to quash one count due to a conflict in the wording listed on the charges.
Carroll County Assistant District Attorney Anne Allen had previously agreed to toss out four counts against Austin — including three counts of simple battery and one count of aggravated assault in 2008 — which had been listed as unknown persons in the 2008 indictment.
When the case was presented in June for a re-indictment, all of the victims had been identified to the grand jury.
A lawsuit was filed against Austin in 2008 by one of the alleged victims, Laura Crowder. According to the suit, Crowder said she went to the oral surgeon’s office in 2006 to have some of her teeth removed. It was during her visit, the woman said, that Austin struck her in the mouth with a metal instrument. The woman said the sedative medication she was given did not work, according to the lawsuit.
In 2008, Austin was indicted on one count of simple battery after allegedly striking Crowder on the head, according to the indictment.
Austin’s attorney, Brian Steel, could not be reached for comment Tuesday or Wednesday.
Anyone else WOULD have. This man has abused children and laughed about it. Now he's been exposed for what he is. He doesn't care that he's humiliated the practice of dentistry and his family name. He a coward in EVERY respect of the word. The only maniac is HIM.
People who aren't tolerating dentists who clock people (and children) in the face and bark at them is a "drama queen"? Please.
--You are making generalizations based upon your opinion.--
"Generalizations"? Do you even know what that word means? HE HIT THEM IN THE FACE WHILE THEY WERE STRAPPED DOWN. The office KEPT LISTS. There are WITNESSES and PHOTOGRAPHS.
--When intelligent and knowledgeable people look into this case they will see that the "assistants" are liars and that they are fueling the fire of the outrageous claimants.--
There's NO MOTIVATION for them to lie! And PLENTY of motivation for them not say anything!
--The anesthetic causes involuntary muscle and mental activity. Yes, the claimants may have thought they were awake but they were still under the affects of a narcotic. Also, I find it very funny that you say he slugged the patients. If this was the case the evidence would be undeniable and the complaintants would have come forward immediately. Read the article. Everything is from several years ago. Why didnt the complaintants come forward immediately. Why didnt the assistants come forward immediately. Beacause it is all false.--
Many of them DID come forward immediately. Patients AND Dental Assistants! And there are PHOTOGRAPHS of the bruises to their faces!
--Go ahead and stop this nonsense.--
Nope, as much as the board trollers and Austin's legal team would like, it's NOT going to stop. Dr. Austin is an unprofessional coward who shouldn't be in charge of a lemonade stand, much less a dental practice. Only when he is behind bars will this nonsense be "stopped".
--The truth shall set you free.--
The truth has been revealed, and Austin's going to jail for it.
--As a professional in the dental field for over 20 years, I will say that these claims are quite outrageous. We have referred patients to Dr. Austin and I have never heard any complaint about him or his staff.--
You won't hear complaints about his staff because it WASN'T his staff who was clocking people in the face and barking at them to shut up. You weren't there, unlike his OWN DENTAL ASSISTANTS.
It was Austin, and ONLY Austin.
Witness after witness after witness. Three Dental Assistants who were THERE and saw it happen and have NOTHING to gain by reporting him.
If dismissing ALL those people makes you feel better at night, knowing that you referred people to that unprofessional gutless psycho, then so be it. That's assuming you're even telling the truth and not just a sock puppet.
And it doesn't just go back to 2004. People have come forward from as far back as 1990. Not for attention, not for money, not for drugs. For one and only one reason: To STOP Austin's psychotic actions toward patients and children. And since he won't quit, or own up to what he's done, or have the dignity to kill himself, he needs to be put behind bars.
Austin is a hateful, twisted little coward and absolutely NOTHING more.
You are a drama queen. You are making generalizations based upon your opinion.

--You seem to have alot of info????--
Yep, sure do.
--All I can say is there are multiple sides to every story.--
Do "multiple sides" have a LIST?
--You must consider the source of every complaintant. You must consider their character and their motive. These are serious accusations. You state that he yeled at people. That is not a crime. Who cares if he yelled at anyone.--
He was yelling at people to "shut up" because they were SCREAMING IN PAIN. For that alone he should get his licence pulled.
--Your statements about hitting people must be thouroughly explained and checked in to. Was this done with malice???--
He would hit them to intimidate them to stop their screaming. He was scared of people in the waiting room hearing the screaming, so he would clock them in the head and yell at them to shut up.
--A commonly used anesthetic, ketamine, can cause a patient to behave violently, tense their muscles, and even yell vulgarities. Were your so called punches or hits simply taps or smacks to gain the patients awareness? Did they even happen????--
They weren't "yelling vulgarities", not even Austin's lawyer is stating that. They were SCREAMING IN PAIN because they were waking up in the middle of their operations! They were STRAPPED DOWN, so he can't even claim "self defense"!
--Check into the assistants character??? What would be their motive for making these accusations???--
Correction, it was THREE Dental Assistants. What would be their motive? How about STOPPING AN ABUSIVE DENTIST?
--For you to get on here and make all these claims, proves that you are somehow involved. What is your motive???--
The same motive as anyone who is a decent human being: Wanting a PSYCHO COWARD like Austin to stop hurting people (including CHILDREN) while their strapped down.
--It is really easy to assassinate someones character. It happens all the time. However, the truth is a different story. Hopefully, the truth will be told. And if it is, Dr. Austin will be acquitted of all charges.--
Sorry, there's three dental assistants, a LIST, and TONS of people and CHILDREN who are showing what the truth is.
--Hopefully, you and all the others who are telling these lies will get yours.--
You're just trolling the board. Three Dental Assistants have no need to lie and jeapordize their own jobs. CHILDREN have no need to lie or get drugs. These aren't a bunch of "crack heads" as you call them. These are normal people, white and black, children and adults. Witness after witness after witness. Employee after employee after employee. Tons of people that aren't asking for attention, aren't asking for money, and never asked for drugs.
There's no "conspiracy." Austin did these things and LAUGHED about it.
That COWARD is not going to get away with it anymore. When he goes to prison, he'll suffer just like his patients suffered.
All I can say is there are multiple sides to every story.
You must consider the source of every complaintant. You must consider their character and their motive. These are serious accusations. You state that he yeled at people. That is not a crime. It is really easy to assassinate someones character. It happens all the time. However, the truth is a different story. Hopefully, the truth will be told. And if it is, Dr. Austin will be acquitted of all charges.
Hopefully, you and all the others who are telling these lies will get yours.
TWO dental assistants came forward who have witnessed it repeatedly. They even had a list of people in their own records who Austin smacked around. The assistants who reported it jeopardized their own jobs, and stood NOTHING to gain from reporting him.
There's people who are reporting it that didn't want drugs or ask for drugs (there are witnesses confirming it), didn't want attention, and didn't have anything to gain whatsoever, and had plenty to lose.
And the news articles on him are only scratching the surface. There's a LOT more people that reported on him. They're just focusing on the solid incidents that's going to get him prison time.
He's going down, and down HARD.
Gordon Trent Austin is a gutless, spineless, unprofessional little coward. May he rot in jail forever.
Also, remember the good book says "Thou shalt not lie."
Keep your chin up. All these crackheads and drug abusers just want money. You are an awesome surgeon and an even better man.
