Douglas County plans to install a new weather warning siren near Mirror Lake Elementary School in western Douglas County to fill a gap in the countywide warning system.

“The siren will be installed within the next month with the city of Villa Rica helping with the installation,” said Jason Milhollin, Douglas County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) director. “It will be the same design as the other 18 Vortex sirens in the county.”

The $20,000 rotating siren was obtained through a 50-50 match, with funds coming from Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA). The matching funds will be provided by Villa Rica, with Douglas County providing operation and maintenance, according to Milhollin.

He said the siren will cover the busy Mirror Lake development, along with the nearby Mirror Lake Elementary School and golf courses.

“Federal and state guidelines call for placing the sirens close to schools and places where outdoor activities occur,” Milhollin said.

Emergency sirens are tested at noon on the first Wednesday of every month. The next siren test will be Aug. 5.

The new siren is a good thing. 1/2 the money will come from other sources and as such will stimulate the economy if the contract to install the siren is issued to local contractors. This area of Georgia is prone to tornadoes and as such an early warning system is a very necessary thing. KUDOS to the Board.
