The Carrollton Police Department made what it considers an unusual drug bust this week - a man was allegedly found growing psychedelic mushrooms.

Robert Hall, 24, of Carrollton was arrested on Nov. 28 and charged with felony manufacturing with intent to distribute psilocybin mushrooms. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Web site, psilocybin causes “muscle relaxation, dilation of pupils, vivid visual and auditory distortions and emotional disturbances.”

For Carrollton police, this was not a normal bust.

“This is something we haven’t come across in a huge, huge time,” Capt. Chris Dobbs said. “This is the first time I’ve seen it.”

Dobbs said police received information that there was drug activity at an apartment on Waverly Way. Narcotics investigators went to the apartment to do a “knock and talk” “ where they ask for permission to search the residence “ and allegedly saw some marijuana on a table.

“They secured the residence and obtained a search warrant,” Dobbs said.

Hall was allegedly selling the mushrooms for $10 per gram and Dobbs said less than $1,000 worth of prepared mushrooms were found. Officers allegedly found five boxes, equipped with fans and lights, where more mushrooms were being grown.

Dobbs said Hall told officers that he learned how to grow the mushrooms and what chemicals to add to make them hallucinogenic from the Internet.
