An accused arsonist and three child rape suspects have been indicted by a grand jury.
University of West Georgia student Joshua B. Luster, 19, was indicted on three counts of arson, one count of manufacturing an explosive device and one count of interference with government property for allegedly setting a fire in his residence hall.
Luster was arrested May 9 in connection with a fire set Feb. 13, one of four fires set in Downs Residence Hall on the UWG campus this year. Police suspect all four of the fires may have been set by the same person, but they are investigating each fire separately.
Luster, a Powder Springs resident, could face up to 20 years in prison and fines up to $25,000 if convicted of all charges. He is currently out of jail on a $10,000 bond.
Calvin Dwayne Johnson, 21, of Carrollton, was indicted on one count of rape, two counts of statutory rape and two counts of child molestation.
Johnson was arrested on Nov. 4, 2007, for burglary. While he was in prison, two girls, one from Heard County and one from Carrollton, reported being assaulted by him in 2006 and 2007, authorities said. The girls were both 15 at the time of the alleged assaults.
Johnson was dating the girl involved in the Carroll County incident, which took place in her home in September 2007, authorities said. He was 20, but allegedly told the girl he was 17.
Joseph Daniel Merica, 81, was indicted on charges of child molestation, kidnapping and rape for allegedly kidnapping and raping an 11-year-old girl in November 2007.
Merica, a Temple resident, allegedly lured the girl into his car and assaulted her. He was arrested after he parked his truck in an off-duty police officer’s driveway, authorities said.
Merica is out of jail on a $350,000 bond.
Stanley Wayne Stean, 52, of Villa Rica, was indicted on one count of rape, one count of aggravated child molestation, one count of false imprisonment and one count of cruelty to children for his alleged role in the rape of a 14-year-old girl.
Stean, who was dating the girl’s guardian, had also allegedly had sex with the girl’s 17-year-old sister on more than one occasion. On April 4, Stean allegedly lured the 14-year-old into the room and forced her to watch him having sex with the 17-year-old before raping the younger girl.
He was arrested April 6 and is still in prison.
Johnson and Stean will enter a plea at their arraignments on Tuesday. Merica and Luster’s arraignments are scheduled for Wednesday.
