From staff reports
Bolstered by the school’s first state boys golf championship, Bremen High School captured the Class A Directors Cup in the boys division this year with 305 points.
The Directors Cup, which has been awarded annually since the 1999-2000 school year, recognizes athletic departments in all GHSA classifications that have excelled and shown superior performance.
The Bremen boys also won the Directors Cup two years ago. They were paced by state runner-up finishes in wrestling and golf that year.
This year, the Blue Devils finished 15 points ahead of Brookstone in the boys division.
Bremen’s victory wasn’t official until Memorial Day when Brookstone lost in the state baseball semifinals. A Cougar victory in the semifinals would have given the Columbus school 20 more points and a clean sweep of the Class A awards (overall, girls and boys divisions).
Bremen’s efforts were led by the boys golf team’s state title, witch garnered the Blue Devils 100 points. The other points came from wrestling (80), tennis (40), football, cross country, and baseball (20 each), track and field (15) and basketball (10).
The girls Director Cup in Class A was won by Brookstone with 300 points. The Bremen girls finished in 15th with 110 points. The Lady Blue Devils were paced by the competitive cheerleaders’ state runner-up finish. Overall, Bremen finished in 8th.
In honor of winning the boys Directors Cup, Bremen will receive a Directors Cup trophy and a wall banner.
