On Saturday, Oct. 4, the Downtown Development Authority, Tallapoosa Business Association and Better Hometown Committee will host the eighth annual City-Wide Yard Sale and the final Possum Pickin’ concert of the season.

The City-Wide Yard Sale, sponsored by the Tallapoosa Business Association, will begin at 8 a.m.

According to Downtown Development Authority Chairman Tommy Allen, the Tallapoosa Business Association began the yard sale eight years ago to bring people into Tallapoosa to help local businesses. He says the event has begun to draw quite a crowd: 2,000 to 3,000 people a year.

“This has grown over the years into a big day for Tallapoosa, and I think it’s been beneficial to our retailers; That’s the whole purpose.”

According to Better Hometown Coordinator Kate Gardner, residents are allowed to set up tables and sell items along Highway 78 east and west, Highway 100 north and south, Head Avenue and Lion Street. There is no charge for setting up a table. The only rule this year is that people must have permission to set up their yard sale on someone else’s property.

“They must receive written permission from the property owners if they are not setting up in their own yards, without it they will be asked to move,” Gardner said.

While there may not be a large number of vendors, all the restaurants in town will be open during the event, and those who attend may even be able to do a little Christmas shopping.

“People will be selling all sorts of things, cloths, baby items, furniture, kitchen items,” Gardner said. “You can usually get some really nice deals on some really nice things.”

At the end of the day, the Better Hometown Committee and Downtown Development Authority will kick off the last concert of the Possum Pickin’ concert series designed to raise money for Downtown Development Authority projects.

Saturday’s concert will start at 7 p.m. on Head Avenue staring bluegrass, gospel groups “Lost and Found” and “Bill Gentry and Randolf County.” Pinto beans and corn bread will be sold at the concert as a fund raiser.

According to Allen, last year’s funds were used to purchase a plot of land on Alewine Street.

“This year we hope to use the funds raised to develop that land into a parking lot/green space,” Allen said.

Gardner, Allen and the Tallapoosa Business Association invite everyone out to this event to help support local businesses and the Downtown Development Authority.
