Carrollton police said three vehicles were reported stolen over the Memorial Day weekend, while attempts were made to steal three others.
One car that had been stolen in Alabama was found in the city.
An orange 1983 Monte Carlo was reported stolen Friday while it was parked outside a house on Refuge Way, according to police. The owner of the car told police there was shattered glass left behind, but that he had cleaned it up before officers arrived.
A blue 2003 Toyota Camry was reported stolen from the Ashley Oaks Apartments on Rome Street Saturday. According to the police report, the car had been left unlocked with the keys inside.
On Sunday, according to police, a Hispanic man reported that someone had stolen his 2002 Chevrolet Trail Blazer sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning while it was parked outside his home on Lane Drive.
Police said that only hours before the man reported the vehicle stolen, DeKalb police contacted Carrollton police to tell investigators that they had impounded the SUV in DeKalb County over the weekend.
According to police, the same SUV, which witnesses said was driven by a Hispanic man, was involved in a hit-and-run rollover crash on Interstate 85 this past weekend.
Police said three other vehicles were found with damage that indicated someone had tried to steal them, including damage to the steering column, during the weekend. The vehicles were parked at the Eagle’s Nest apartments and Eagle’s Cliff apartments on Bledsoe Street and at Griffin Homes on Childs Street.
Dobbs said investigators believe the attempted auto thefts are connected to the same suspect or group of suspects.
On Friday, police said an abandoned car in the Kroger parking lot on South Park Street had been stolen earlier in Randolph County, Ala.
• Carrollton police are investigating an incident in which a man allegedly exposed himself to a woman shopping inside the Wal-Mart store on South Park Street in Carrollton Friday evening.
Carrollton Police Capt. Chris Dobbs said a 28-year-old woman reported a man following her around the store. When she turned to see who was following her, she reported catching a glimpse of an unidentified man exposing his genitals through his pants.
Dobbs said the woman quickly walked away from the man and alerted store employees about what she had just witnessed. The incident occurred at about 5:30 p.m.
The man is described as Hispanic, approximately 5-feet-7 inches tall and weighing 140 pounds with his hair in a ponytail. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a white T-shirt.
• A Whitesburg woman trying to buy a new home found out to her surprise that she already owned two houses in Georgia and Alabama.
According to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office report, the woman realized she was a victim of identity fraud when her credit company informed her that her name was used to purchase two houses in Snellville and in Alabama.
• Two Carroll County firefighters and a volunteer firefighter were involved in a crash Saturday afternoon when the fire truck they were in went off the shoulder of Carrollton-Tyus Road and the pavement broke - causing the truck to be pulled completely off the road before overturning, according to the report.
Officials said the volunteer firefighter onboard complained of neck, back and hip pain and continues to recover from non-life-threatening injuries sustained in the wreck.
The other two firefighters onboard were not injured.
The fire truck sustained extensive damage and a reserve engine has been placed into operation at Station One in the county.
• Carroll County firefighters were sent to a house on Moss Ferry Road Sunday after the homeowners called 911 when they smelled smoke in a bedroom around 8 p.m.
Fire Capt. Tyler Shadix said when firefighters arrived they noticed a large pine tree near the home had been struck by lightning. Once inside the house, a softball-size hole was discovered in the roof and several shingles and plywood had been blown out from a lightning hit.
Shadix said firefighters placed plastic over the hole to try and secure it for the homeowner until a repair could be made. The homeowner was also advised not to turn any power on to the bedroom until it could be inspected by an electrician.
• Authorities are searching for an unidentified black man who is wanted in connection with a theft at a local coin laundry. Authorities said the man steals trash cans.
