Both daytime and nighttime events are scheduled Friday in Douglas County to observe the eighth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
A noon remembrance ceremony will be held on the steps of the Douglas County Courthouse, followed by a 6 p.m. free concert, courtesy of Soldiers’ Angels, on O’Neal Plaza in downtown Douglasville.
“Remembering 9/11 and the Victims and Sacrifices: Celebrating Our Nation and Our Freedoms,” is the title of the noon event at the courthouse.
“Ceremonies will begin with the presentation of the colors by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Color Guard,” said Wes Tallon, county communications and community relations director. “Commission Chairman Tom Worthan will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.”
The Rev. Scott Hughes and the Rev. Max Caylor of the Douglasville First United Methodist Church, will lead the “Litany of Remembrance and Godly Hope,” with participation by the attendees and special guests.
Atendees will sing “God Bless America” and place red, white and blue ribbons on the Liberty Tree (a Dutch elm planted on Sept. 11, 2002) in front of the courthouse. This will be followed by a closing prayer.
The free 6-10 p.m. concert is being sponsored by Bluelight Entertainment. It will be kicked off by American Idol finalist Alexandrea Lushington of Douglasville. Also featured will be the music of My Brother’s Trucker, a band composed of local artists Brian Collins, Jimmy Anderson and Tim O’Donovan. “Soldiers’ Angels merchandise will be available for sale, and the public is invited to sign free cards for soldiers overseas,” said Dianne Moore, Georgia state manager. “A special $10 CD, “Sing and Salute,” compiled by the contributing artists will be available, with proceeds going to Soldiers’ Angels.”
