In its first meeting in nearly three months, the Carrollton City Council had much on the agenda Monday. While the biggest news of the night was the council’s decision to put a referendum on Sunday alcohol-by-the-drink sales on the November ballot, the council also took action on a number of other measures.
• The council named the theater in the Carrollton Cultural Arts Center as the Danny N. Mabry Theater after the long-time civil servant who passed away last year. Mabry served as the Carrollton city manager for 25 years before later serving as city manager for Villa Rica and Bowdon.
• Approved a zoning request for Zane Hetzel on behalf of Arden International Properties LLC to rezone a parcel at 209 Clifton Terrace from single family residential to residential multi-family to establish a care center for up to four patients at a time.
• Approved a tax-abatement request made by Archer Properties regarding the Campus Quad Apartments and the Mayfair Apartments. At the most-recent meeting, the Carroll County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to abate the county ad valorem tax for both apartment complexes. By agreeing to the abatement, the city requires that the complex meet a number of requirements, including those governing how many employees the two complexes must retain at all times.
• Voted to award a contract for a new fire truck to Pierce Manufacturing for $427, 231. The new truck will replace a 1993 model used at the East Carroll Fire Station, which was opened last year. The purchase will be made out of the most-recent special purpose local option sales tax.
• Voted to award a bid for paving asphalt to Kennesaw-based Butch Thompson Enterprises for $1,683,525. Because the project required unit rate bids based on the actual tonnage of asphalt used in the repaving efforts, the cost to the city could come in significantly lower. The ultimate price will depend in large part on what roads the council decides to pave.
• Voted to award a bid for re-striping streets to Peak Pavement Marking in Columbus, for $87,113. This too is a unit rate project, and the actual amount paid by the city will likely vary from the amount presented to the council.
• Approved a list of nominees for the available positions on the Carroll City-County Hospital Authority. The list will be presented to Tanner CEO Loy Howard for the final decision.
• Reappointed Sally Bobick to another term on the Carroll County Library Board. Her previous term expired on June 30.
