Candidates have been approved to run for city council elections that will be held in November for the cities of Buchanan and Tallapoosa.
City of Tallapoosa Election Superintendent Gina Griffith said two candidates are seeking the Council Post 1 position, which Councilmember Connie Gentry has decided to resign from. Tallapoosa residents Ann Crim and Dan Pope are running for that soon-to-be vacated seat.
After wrapping up his four-year term, Tallapoosa Mayor Pete Bridges’ position would also be up for grabs; however, Griffith said he can remain in his position since no one is running as opposition.
Meanwhile, Buchanan City Clerk Karen King confirmed that Councilmembers Debbie Johnson and Donna Johnson have decided to resign from their positions. King noted four candidates are in competition to become council members at-large.
“At the cities, there’s usually posts, but Buchanan isn’t signed to specific locations. We just have running at-large,” she explained. “The two with the highest votes will get those (upcoming vacant) seats.”
The candidates running for the Buchanan City Council are David Dixon, Robert Farmer, Kenny Hughes and McKinley Pate.
A candidate forum will be held at Buchanan City Hall on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 6 :30 p.m.
Residents can pick up voter registration material at the Buchanan City Hall.
Tallapoosa residents can pick up voter registration materials at the Tallapoosa City Hall or the Tallapoosa Library.
The last day of registration to be eligible to vote in this election is Monday, Oct. 5.
