Carrollton police believe a man shot and killed his wife before taking his own life Thursday afternoon at the couple’s home.

Police, responding to an emergency call around 2:47 p.m., discovered the bodies of Cleodus Bryant, 70, and his wife Frances Bryant, 76, at their 201 River Drive residence. A relative reportedly stopped by the residence and made the 911 call.

Coroner Sam Eady pronounced both the man and woman dead at the scene and confirmed that they died of gunshot wounds.

“From the preliminary investigation it looks like he shot her and then turned the gun on himself,” Patrol Capt. Jamison Sailors said. “At this point, we don’t know why this happened.”

Sailors said he was not aware of any previous domestic disturbances or medical conditions that could have factored into the motive behind the shooting.

Police said they believe the Bryants were alone in the house at the time of the shooting and Sailors said he did not know of anyone else living at the residence besides the couple, whom had lived there for at least two years.

“They lived in the corner house where there is always a lot of traffic,” Sailors said. “When I was on patrol in the area I met them a few times. They were always nice to me and I never had any issues with them.”

The Bryants have at least five adult children, according to Sailors.

“The children I met were very nice people and they seemed normally upset,” he said.

Police recovered the pistol used in the shooting and are currently using it as part of their investigation. The bodies were taken to Tanner Medical Center for autopsies.

During his 17 years as a police officer, Sailors said he has seen very few similar situations.

“This is a rare thing and I hope it stays that way,” he said. “Just when you think you’ve seen it all, people still surprise you.”

Brother Cleodus really loved Sister Frances and I don't know of any reason for him to do this deed. It is not for man to know all the parts of men's hearts and only God can answer in the end.

May both of them rest in peace and may God confort their 5 children.
