Dorsett Shoals Road should be open in three to five days, Randy Hulsey, county Department of Transportation (DOT) director, told the Tuesday Board of Commissioners (BOC) meeting.
Hulsey said the current rainy weather is having an impact on the work, but the road should be ready within a week. Dorsett Shoals in a major east-west route between Chapel Hill Road and Highway 5 in the Bill Arp community.
The county opened the Capps Ferry Road bridge across the Chattahoochee River Monday and plans to open Anneewakee Road in about a week after the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) completes bridge repairs.
“One hundred seventy roads were closed on the Monday of the storm,” Hulsey said. “As of Oct. 5, 55 roads remained closed.”
He said opening of Skyview Drive in Lithia Springs is awaiting a bridge inspection by GDOT.
Hulsey said most road repairs should be completed within six to eight months, but a few will require at least a year.
He said the Mason Creek Road bridge over Mobley Creek is completely gone and will require designing and building a new bridge.
“No repair effort there makes sense,” he said.
The approach to the Dog River bridge on Post Road was washed out and will require state bridge inspection before a decision is made.
State bridge inspectors inspected the Highway 166 bridge over Anneewakee Creek last week and determined that it will need to be replaced due to flood damage. GDOT officials said the road should reopen by next summer. However, many Highway 166 commuters will be able to take Capps Ferry Road to reach the Atlanta airport and other destinations in South Fulton County.
A complete list of road closures is posted daily to the county Web site at www.CelebrateDouglasCounty.com.
