Two major Douglas County east-west corridors, Anneewakee Road and Dorsett Shoals Road, were re-opened Friday afternoon in time for heavy weekend traffic.
Wes Tallon, county communications and community relations director, said Anneewakee Road was reopened about 2 p.m. after bridge repairs were completed on the Anneewakee Creek bridge. Dorsett Shoals had been closed due to a culvert problem and it was reopened about 2:30 p.m., he said.
The two roads had been closed since Sept. 21 flooding caused major damage throughout the county.
Dorsett Shoals Road is a major connector between Chapel Hill Road and Georgia Highway 5, while Anneewakee Road provides a connection from Chapel Hill Road to Georgia Highway 92.
The county opened the Capps Ferry Road bridge earlier this week, providing a route for Atlanta and South Fulton commuters who are avoided the still closed Highway 166.
The Anneewakee Creek bridge on Highway 166 was washed out by the flooding and will have to be replaced, according to Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). Officials hope to have the new bridge built and reopened by next summer.
Two other bridge washouts have closed Mason Creek Road at Mobley Creek and Post Road at Dog River. Randy Hulsey, county Department of Transportation director, said Tuesday that a decision on the Post Road bridge awaits state inspection. He said the Mason Creek Road bridge is gone and will require building a new one.
A complete list of road closures is posted daily to the county Web site, www.CelebrateDouglasCounty.com.
