The disaster recovery center at Lithia Springs will close tomorrow at 7 p.m.

It is one of eight that will shut down, according to Ricardo Zuniga, an external affairs officer with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which operates them along with the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA).

The center, located at Lithia Springs United Methodist Church, was receiving little foot traffic from residents who encountered flood damage three weeks ago, Zuniga said.

The Douglasville center — located at Heritage Baptist Church — will remain open. People are still coming in, he said.

Sixteen centers were opened in counties across the state at the peak of the recovery efforts right after the floods in mid-September. Five closed Oct. 10, according to a news release from FEMA.

That will leave only three in the metro Atlanta area. In addition to the one here, the other centers are located in Cobb and Gwinnett counties.

“We are closing these recovery centers because traffic in them has slowed considerably,” said Charley English, GEMA director and state coordinating officer. “We will have three recovery centers still open, and help is available through other sources.”

Officials urge residents to go to the centers to meet one-on-one with specialists to get information or assistance with their recovery from the floods.

And they urge residents who encounter additional damage from heavy rains this week to contact them to update their records.

The three disaster centers will continue to be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, until further notice.

Anyone who would like additional information or want to register for assistance because of storm damage may do so online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 800-462-7585.
