Anne Webb heard what sounded like fire crackers going off outside of her apartment Sunday between 10 and 10:30 p.m.

When the 74-year-old Villa Rica resident called her next-door neighbor about the noise, she discovered that the popping sounds were actually gunshots.

“It made a nervous wreck out of me,” Webb said. “I wouldn’t let my son and daughter-in-law leave me alone because I was so scared.”

Villa Rica police responded to the Hampton Court Apartments at 70 Industrial Blvd. after receiving a flurry of emergency calls around 10:30 p.m.

When they arrived, police discovered that 21-year-old Jacory Pugh of Villa Rica had shot his 17-year-old brother and a 19-year-old man of Douglasville after the two had argued over a hat and possibly a Sony PlayStation, according to Villa Rica police Capt. Keith Shaddix.

Shaddix explained that the two men came downstairs from apartment A8 after the tenant, an 18-year-old man, told them to take their dispute outside.

During the fight, Pugh alledgedly noticed that his brother was losing and attempted to break the men apart by firing two gunshots.

One of bullets hit the 19-year-old just below the rib cage and came out of his side while the other hit Pugh’s brother in the side and lodged in his body.

One of the men was taken to the hospital by a friend while the other waited for the ambulance.

Both men were transported to Atlanta for medical care. One is currently at Atlanta Medical Center and the other is at Grady Hospital. Shaddix said both are in stable but serious condition.

Police apprehended Pugh around 7 a.m. Monday when they found him in his brother’s hospital room. He was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault.

Webb said she had filed numerous complaints about disturbances from apartment A8 in the past.

“On Oct. 12, I called the police twice because of the fighting upstairs,” Webb said. “The boy always said he had it under control. I would knock on the ceiling to get them to be quiet and then they brought it outside. When I walked out there I saw two boys fighting and two others pulling them apart.”

This time, Webb said she didn’t walk outside.

“I’m so glad I stayed in my apartment,” she said. “It’s just a mess, I’ve never lived in a place like this.”

Another tenant, Bobbie Grantham, said she saw the cop cars and lights outside of her window after the dispute.

“I called my neighbors to find out what happened,” Grantham said. “It’s scary. I can dodge a fight, but when it comes to bullets, I can’t dodge them.”

District Manager Paulene Sammons of the Boyd Management Group, who owns the complex, said the company has to wait for an official police report before it can take action.

“At this time we have to let the police finish their investigation. Once the investigation is complete, we will evaluate the results and follow through,” Sammons said. “We are very concerned about the situation. We consider our complexes as communities and it is our job to provide a safe and nice place for people to live.”
