Dallas has one contested race and Hiram has two in Tuesday’s election of city council members.

Kelly Carter is running for a sixth four-year term representing Ward 1 on the Dallas City Council. Terry Johnson, who served as an Army captain in the war in Iraq and moved to Vista Lake community several years ago, is challenging the retired incumbent councilman in Ward 1.

The race for Post 3 in Hiram has three candidates: Stephen Bray, a mechanical engineering project manager and graduate of Georgia Tech; Teresa Philyaw, a retired real estate agent and lifelong resident; and Billy Sims Jr., an electrician and lifelong resident as well.

In Hiram Post 5, Earlene Graham, an international sales manager living 31 years in Hiram and all her life in Paulding, is facing Meg Hunt-Williams, a missions worker and lifelong resident.

None of the Hiram incumbents — Charles Schafer in Post 3, Alvin Sims in Post 4 and Vince Smith in Post 5 — sought re-election. No one qualified to run in Post 4 except Derrick Battle, who will take the Post 4 seat in January.

In Dallas, Ward 3 Councilman Griffin White had no opposition in seeking re-election, nor did at-large Councilwoman Nancy Rakestraw Arnold.

The Paulding County Board of Elections will man the polls at Dallas City Hall and Hiram Community Center from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday. Advance voting for the Dallas race continues through Friday at the Elections Office at Watson Government Complex, and advance voting for the Hiram races is being conducted at Hiram Community Center, 217 Main St. Photo identification is required for advance voting, which is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and for voting in person.

Candidates are elected citywide in both municipal elections.
