Benny D. Crane led in Douglas County votes among the nine State Senate District 35 candidates seeking to fill the unexpired term of Kasim Reed who resigned to enter the Atlanta mayoral race.
Douglas County represents only a small part of the district which also includes Fulton County.
All candidates are Democrats.
District-wide totals were not available at press time, but a runoff election is expected. It will be held on Dec.1.
Of the 11 Douglas County precincts in District 35, the unofficial voting tally was:
• Benny D. Crane, 625, 25.1 percent;
• Donzella James, 443, 17.8 percent;
• George Sneed, 286, 11.5 percent;
• Rosie Jackson, 239, 9.6 percent;
• Torrey Johnson, 234, 9.4 percent;
• Aaron Johnson, 214, 8.6 percent;
• Cory J. Lynch, 145, 5.8 percent;
• K. Atterbury, 127, 5.1 percent;
• Damarcus Peters, 99, 4.0 percent;
• and Write-in-votes, 78, 3.1 percent.
At press time, The Associated Press was reporting that James held an early lead state-wide in the nine-way race. James is a former state senator who has made several unsuccessful bids for Congress.
