In the end, it took the final tally of absentee and early voting ballots to decide the heated Temple mayoral race, and Mayor Rick Ford narrowly survived the challenge of former mayor Lester Harmon.

After regular ballots were counted Harmon held a 20-vote lead, but once more than 40 absentee and early voting ballots were officially counted Ford had escaped with a two-vote win — 303 to 301. Barring a challenge or a possible recount that overturns the results, the victory allows Ford to claim his second term. He defeated Harmon four years ago to win his first term.

Whitesburg Mayor Amy Reeves Williford won her bid for re-election with a 16-vote margin over challenger R.H. Vanlandingham.

In Carrollton, voters approved a referendum that authorizes the City Council to allow Sunday sales of alcohol by the drink in restaurants. The measure was passed handily with more than 58 percent approval, 1,233 votes to 833.

In Temple, Ford said he is ready to move beyond a campaign that included separate challenges against both his and Harmon’s qualifications to run.

“I’m ready to put this behind us,” Ford said. “This election has really fractured the city and it’s time for us to put this behind us and everybody start working together to make Temple the great place that it can be. There was a lot of negative campaigning that I was very disappointed in, but now that the election is over let’s move forward.

“It makes me feel great that I had the confidence of the people and I appreciate the confidence they have in me. I’m really sort of speechless right now because I was behind and then all of a sudden I’m ahead.”

Calls to Harmon’s cell phone were not immediately returned Tuesday night.

The incumbent was not so lucky in the Temple Ward 1 race, which saw Larry Estvanko lose to challenger Terron Bivins, 60 percent to 40 percent. In the Temple Ward 2 race, Jay Mann defeated Howard Walden, 59 percent to 40 percent.

The only contested Carrollton City Council race was that between Mike Patterson and Casey Vance, each man hoping to replace former Councilman Rusty Gray in the Ward 2 seat. After the votes were tallied, Patterson won by slightly more than 1 percent, with 340 votes to Vance’s 330 votes.

“I’m real excited about the opportunity to serve, mainly, and I’m glad we got all those people out to vote,” Patterson said. “We both ran a good race, and we both worked hard, and it could have gone either way.”

The contested Mt. Zion City Council races saw both incumbents losing. In the Post 3 race, challenger Andrew Richie beat incumbent Kathy Albright 60 percent to 40 percent, and in the Post 4 race, incumbent Donald Newman lost to Bobby Mullenix 95 votes to 54 votes.

In Villa Rica, Rusty Dean beat Edward Hurst for the Ward 3 seat on the City Council, 66 percent to 33 percent.

A runoff between incumbent Joey Kelley and Patrick Henrickson will be needed to determine the Villa Rica Ward 4 seat. Kelley received 153 votes (47 percent) to Henrickson’s 144 (46 percent). A third candidate, James Scales, had 25 votes.

The runoff between Kelley and Henrickson will be held Dec. 1.

The Ward 5 race saw incumbent Woody Holland beat Scott Bates by a total of eight votes, with Holland receiving 53 percent and Bates receiving 46 percent respectively.

Ok, I am not one to take part in all this comment stuff, but I find that it is time for me to exercise my first amendment right as all of you do. Now all of us must understand that elections are like any other game. There are winners and there are losers. Some of the citizens may be happy with who won and some may be unhappy. That's life y'all. But this election proves that the system designed by our founding fathers really works. Those that wanted Ford, Mann, and Bivins in office came out and voted. For all of you that voted against these people, get over it. The majority of this state didn't want our current administration in the White House, but guess what? Obama is our nations leader and we have to live with that. Good, bad or indifferent. There has been no proof of anyone stealing anything from this fine city. If there were, then certain people would have been indicted by a Grand Jury. There is no evidence supporting any if these claims or that the police department is using "speed traps". Ok, so there are 1 or 2 officers that write tickets and enforce traffic laws. Some of you out there may have even received a ticket. The truth of the matter is this, if you don't want to receive a ticket, don't violate traffic laws. Whether your in Temple or any place else in the state. Take responsibility for your actions and stop blaming the cops for your mistakes. The drama caused by certain people in this city is why they didn't win this election. The drama they continuously cause is why no large corporate business will come to Temple and set up shop. When these CEO's constantly see negative publicity in the news, they say "NO" to Temple. When you have former police officers obtaining recordings only to make others look bad for their own benefit, is outrageous. When are people going to grow up and stop acting like this city is Hazard County. The Duke Boys and Boss Hogg don't live here. Everyone needs to put all the immature antics aside and lets move forward and make this city a better place. Stop with the "Open Records" requests fishing for something negative. Take responsibility for your actions, and stop blaming everyone else for your shortfalls.

Mr. Harmon the Waldens and their Motley Crue of followers (Govers/Ransoms)cost you this election. I guess Linda forgot about the 2 now former city employees that witnessed her use the n word at Simmons - and then she was escorted out of city hall by one of the now former employees. Sorry, but we don't need any Klansmen or Klanswomen running this town. You people crying about speed traps- don't break the law and you will not be punished - its really that easy!! Now maybe the city can move forward and get out of the redneck age. Sorry that the two former PD employees will not be getting their jobs back- one was questionable, but the other got a raw deal-fired for nothing other than small town politics. Good luck my friend. Harmon there are some that really wanted to see you in office, but once the Waldens got the spotlight we knew it was over. Next time choose better running mates and maybe things will go better. Come on Open records gang get back to work find the dirt!!! - but the story on the dirt is getting really old - FOCUS ON SOMETHING ELSE AND MAYBE PEOPLE WILL TAKE YOU SERIOUSLY.

just to comment below, the civil rights movement laid the foundation for a modern United States of America. Some of the issues it covered were protection of voting rights, along with freedom and equality for all races and ethnicity's. It was meant to construct a foundation stone and create a community with a common faith and religion that is humanity. The vision was to succeed in bringing about an intermixing between people with different races, irrespective of their sex, creed and religion . (Ganesh Bhosale) or even their political views, never was it a part of a plan to have racial words used to provoke a vote in an election. Sometimes Gods will is not to be understood, but to be accepted without having to understand it, that is where faith comes in to play and through faith comes understanding that he is still on his throne regardless of circumstance. I am not "sicofitall", but blessed by it all because All things work together for the good of those who love him.

Mrs. Walden is not a minority and has not faced racial segregation, profiling or bigotry so to compare her situation to the Civil Rights movement of the 1960's is ludicrous. You obliviously lack historical knowledge and any sort of compassion for African Americans who truly suffered racial injustice. Mrs. Walden is no martyr. What this campaign proved is that Temple residence are tired of the lies and deceit perpetrated by the Waldens. God's will has been done and I am sorry that you cannot understand that. My hero is our Lord Jesus and I hope you find comfort, truth and joy in his presence. May God bless you and your family!

I would just like to say that what happened to Mrs Walden was wrong on so many levels its made me question my own belief in justice, to continue to victimize someone who regardless of her tactics fought the fight for the rights of the people in Temple only makes the crime more gruesome. Since when is being an activist considered a justified reason to be beaten? In the 1960's that behavior was met with outrage, united activist lead freedom rides and protest across our nation not to mention the birth of something called the Civil Rights Movement. It doesn't matter who sided with who, the voters once again made a choice, regardless if they did so with false information, or after seeing a letter filled with racial slurs and finger pointing at the three candidates who lost. All this campaign proved is that you cant fight city hall. You cant do anything about wasteful spending, slander, cash with no receipts, speed traps or any other issue that has long plagued the city of Temple. You can however get attacked and then get blamed for "staging" the whole event, you can get away with passing out letters filled with lies and filth and face no consequence, you can be persecuted for doing right and awarded and commended for practicing wrong. I believe the days of heated campaigns are over for a very long time in the city of Temple. I for see the next several elections with the incumbents facing absolutely No opposition at all. Who will dare run against a machine such as this? Who will ever be ignorant enough to place their name on a ballad and face the horrors and the attacks that those running in this election did? It set the standard for years to come. As for the comments regarding the "whining" to come from those who lost, don't hold your breath waiting to hear it. The whining wont come, and any tears shed for this city will be witnessed and comforted by a higher power. God faces good and evil head on, he discerns in a way no human can. If God can bring the BEST thing that ever happened in human history which is the redemption of mankind OUT of the most horrible event in human history..the crucifixion of Christ..then he is well capable and able to turn evil around on a dime and use it for his good. Sometimes we have to step aside and let him work in ways we can not understand. As for the candidates who ran, I thank you for the choice you gave me when I went to the polls, for the sacrifice you made to be that choice, and it pains me for all the injustice you faced. Lester Harmon, Howard Walden, Larry Estavanko...you are my heroes.

Pleeeaaaassse....don't invoke God's name or good with evil when talking about Rick Ford!!! You may be glad that Ford won, but this is in NO WAY, ABSOLUTELY NO WAY, good triumping over evil. Give me a BREAK!!!!! Ford and Jay Mannn are two of the MOST EVIL men I know with no character, honesty, or integrity. Just a chip off the old block of Daddy Larry who's carried both of them thru these last few years!!! Obviously, you've had no real dealing with them like some of us have had at City Hall over the years!! Shame on you for not knowing what you're talking about!!!!

I Am Sick this morning for Temple - we now face 4 more LONG years of allowing Ford to steal from this city and bully anybody and everybody he wants to. Lester ain't great - but at least he is not a bully and he has the best interest of the town at heart. I am telling you folks - I know - Ford is dishonest, self-centered, and could care less about Temple.

I want to REALLY REALLY thank loud mouth, vulgar talking, red-neck Ms Walden this morning - thanks to YOU and your red neck ways - Lester lost the election - your crying and drama on TV turned people against Lester. Yes you - EVERYBODY is so sick of you - all you really want is to get you big fat lazy son a job back on the police force so he can drvie around in a city car with a gun - hopefully that will not happen - but because of red-neck hollering YOU - we are now stuck with Ford and Jay Mann. I even voted for your idiot husband - I did now want Jay Mann who is a hot head, a drunk, a liar, and as dishonest as his

father Larry - but one more time - thanks to your LOUD MOUTH - Lester lost - I am hope you are very happy this morning.

Temple citizens - watch Ford and Jay Mann - they will steal and take advantage of you! Beware!

Citizens of Temple, you get what you pay for. You just told this man that what he has been doing is "o.k." There will come a time when he plays you for a fool and his true nature shows itself, then you will look to the ones that stood up to him and you will cry, "Help us!" And they will reply, "No!" All I can see now are lawsuits that will drain your city. But don't worry, this man will take care of it, or will he?

All I can say is PRAISE THE LORD for watching over Temple!! The townspeople have spoken, so you trouble makers need to retreat back in to your hidey-holes and cry to somebody who cares. It's NOT US!
