A light turnout is expected in Douglas County today as voters in only 12 precincts will be casting ballots in runoff races.

Eleven precincts will vote in the 35th District Georgia Senate runoff between Donzella James and Torrey O. Johnson, both Democrats. The winner of this race will fill the unexpired term of Kasim Reed (D-Atlanta) who resigned to run in the Atlanta mayoral race.

The other runoff contest is in the Mirror Lake precinct, Villa Rica City Council, Ward 4. The race is between incumbent Joey Kelley and challenger Patrick Hendrickson.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Voters who were qualified to vote in the Nov. 3 election can vote in today’s runoff, regardless of whether they voted Nov. 3.

Only 23 voters cast early ballots in the senate race, while 25 cast ballots in the Villa Rica council contest, according to Laurie Fulton, election supervisor.

The 11 precincts involved in the 35th Senate District race include Annette Winn, Beulah, Boundary Waters, Golden Methodist, Colonial Hills, Old Courthouse, Deer Lick Park, Factory Shoals Middle, Lithia Springs High, Stewart Middle and Turner Middle.
