Paulding Fire Station No. 11, the Bentwater District Station, officially opened in ceremonies Dec. 8 at 1025 Harmony Grove Church Road. The station began answering calls Dec. 1 and is staffed with two firefighters and one sergeant around the clock to reduce response time in the area. The station has a two-apparatus bay with a Class-A fire engine and a licensed rescue truck. A Sheriff’s Office precinct will go in the same building, and a library facility on adjoining property is scheduled for construction in 2010. The public safety facility was funded by the five-year improvement plan under SPLOST.

Paulding commissioners took steps Dec. 8 to construct the Pumpkinvine Water Reuse Pump Station and accepted a $110,500 developer contribution to help widen Bill Carruth Parkway and construct entrance and turn lanes.
Paulding County Medical Office Building LLC and Paulding County Medical Village LLC, owned mostly by doctors, agreed to the development stipulation, and Paulding Department of Transportation Director Scott Greene said the county is “beginning to wrap the project up” with possibly one other developer contribution before going to bid. Greene said the agreement minimizes public cost and traffic disruption.
The Board of Commissioners approved a $90,700 contract with Croy Engineering for bidding assistance and construction management for the water reuse facility that will allow nearby residents to buy treated wastewater for irrigation. The board also pre-approved the lowest, qualified bidder to construct the facility for an amount not to exceed $1,650,000.
The project is moving fast to comply with a Jan. 1 notice to proceed, and Water System Director Michael Carter said he will bring the board “up to speed before notice to proceed.” The design portion was completed during the summer, and bids were to be opened Dec. 15 for the project, which includes 2,300 feet of pipeline.
The board appointed Pat Tibbitts county clerk and, in a meeting with all unanimous votes, denied an appeal by Craig Summer, who charged that his property was assessed $347 too high in 2009. The Board of Assessors had also denied the appeal.
Commissioners approved closed session discussion of land acquisition and authorized the county attorney to acquire five parcels, with details delayed until purchase.
The board presented a certificate of recognition to Army Capt. Chad Curl, who served in Iraq in 2005-2006 and is undertaking a second tour in Afghanistan.
Commissioners followed the recommendation of the Planning Commission in approving three zoning matters:
• the application of Keith A. Butler and Entrust Retirement Services of Ga. to rezone 2.8 acres east of Highway 92 and north of Hardy Circle from B-1 to R-2 with no development plans at present;
• renewal of a land-use permit for Nadine D. Holcomb to operate a hair salon in an existing accessory structure on 18.94 acres at 7328 Villa Rica Highway;
• a special-use permit for T-Mobile on 14.39 acres at 3123 Macland Road for a 160-foot monopole telecommunications tower.
