A man died Wednesday morning after suffering injuries when his vehicle collided with a train at the Sewell Road railroad crossing in downtown Bremen.

Bremen Police Lt. Blane Cochran says the victim, who’s identity has not yet been disclosed, was driving northbound over the railroad crossing on Sewell Road when the driver’s side of his 1997 Ford Explorer was hit by a Union Pacific train traveling eastbound on the tracks just before 9 a.m.

“The vehicle was struck in the driver’s side, then it overturned,” according to Cochran’s investigation at the scene.

Cochran said the impact of the crash caused fatal injuries, noting the driver was ejected from his vehicle. Ambucare workers arrived to transport the victim to Higgins General Hospital in Bremen, where he later died.

Police confirmed that the accident was caused by the driver’s failure to yield right-of-way to the train.

The two train engineers on board during the accident were left unharmed; however, their train involved in the collision sustained some “noticeable” damage.

Cochran says that all of the debris from the accident has been removed, and the train tracks were not damaged.
