Paulding basketball teams played a very limited schedule last week as schools were preparing for the holiday break.

Going into the break, only three teams in the county have a winning record.

The Hiram boys are off to a good start, with a 6-2 record and both losses coming to highly ranked teams in the state.

The Hornets gave highly ranked Lithia Springs all it could handle before falling by a score of 58-52 on Dec. 15.

Hiram’s only other loss this year was to Hillgrove.

The South Paulding boys team is 6-4 after weathering a three-game losing streak.

On Dec. 15, the Spartans lost a close decision to Douglas County 69-65 and lost to Whitewater on Friday 56-49.

The Lady Spartans also have a 6-4 record.

On Dec. 15, they pulled off a big upset on the road over unbeaten and highly ranked Douglas County by a score of 43-39.

“The girls made history in one of the most exciting games in girls basketball thus far,” South Paulding coach Kelly Nye-Hinkson said.

This marked the first time that the Lady Spartans defeated a team ranked in the state.

Three seniors led the way for the Lady Spartans, with Porsha Martin tossing in 17 points and Stormey Smith chipping in with 10 points and some important leadership down the stretch.

Senior Meghan Brown iced the game for the Spartans, hitting two crucial free throws with 3.2 seconds left.

“We are so very proud of them,” Nye-Hinkson said.

On Friday night, the Lady Spartans were on the road again, losing to Whitewater in a close game 39-37.

In other county action on Dec. 15, Haralson County won a close one over Paulding County 44-41.

The Patriots are now 1-8 on the year and are struggling to compete with other teams due to lack of height.

Paulding County does not have a player listed at over 6 feet, and that has played a major role in the Patriots’ losses thus far in the 2009-2010 season.

The Lady Patriots also lost to Haralson County 62-42 on the same date.

On Friday, East Paulding’s boys held on to win over Kell 55-53 and improved their record to 2-6.
