Hiram wins Campbell basketball tourney

The Hiram boys basketball team continued to roll last week, winning three times and claiming the Campbell Holiday Tournament championship in the process.

The Hornets are now 12-2 on the year, with the only two losses coming in close games against Lithia Springs and Hillgrove, two teams ranked in the top 10 in the state AAAA poll by gasports.com.

On Dec. 28, Hiram beat North Cobb 56-48, followed with a win over Campbell 83-80 on Dec.er 29 and claimed the championship on Dec. 30 by beating Santa Fe, Fla., 79-69.

North Paulding played in the Pickens County Christmas Tournament and finished with a 1-2 record.

In the opening game on Dec. 28, the Wolfpack beat host Pickens County 49-43.

On Dec. 29, North Paulding lost to Jefferson 68-63 in overtime and lost to Alexander 62-40 on Dec. 30.

The Wolfpack is now 2-9 on the year.

The Lady Wolfpack also played in the Pickens County tournament, losing to Pickens County 71-33 and to Kell 50-25.

The Lady Wolfpack is now 0-11 on the year.

South Paulding’s Lady Spartans beat Creekview in overtime on Dec. 28, 38-29.

Two seniors paced the win for South Paulding, with Porsha Martin leading the way with 15 points and Stormey Smith contributing 11.

On Dec. 29, Kell overpowered South Paulding 59-39, leaving the Lady Spartans with an overall record of 7-5.

The East Paulding Lady Raiders lost to Dalton 50-29 on Dec. 30 and are now 4-8 on the year.

Despite winning four individual matches, East Paulding placed fourth in the 15-team Alexander Hardcore Invitational Saturday. EPHS finished with 168.5 points. Grayson won with 239 points, followed by host Alexander (206) and Allatoona (175). Hiram placed No. 7 with 103 points.

Anton Mangin of the Raiders defeated Josh Martin of Hiram on a forfeit at 130 pounds; Kevin Olson won the 135-pound title over Preston Berrong of Cass 9-2, T.J. Boone beat Nick Nastanovich of Allatoona at 140 pounds on a major decision 15-7 and Eric Badertcher beat Mike Moore of Grayson 17-2 to take the heavyweight division.

Hiram’s best efforts were a pair of second-place finishes. Ryan Fielder reached the finals at 145 pounds before losing to Billy Meek of Cass on a pin at the 3:54 mark, while an injury cost Martin a chance to win a title.
