U.S. Rep. David Scott will return to Douglasville Feb. 1 for a briefing on the Ga. Highway 92 relocation project.

Scott’s last visit for an Aug. 1 town hall meeting on the project was derailed near the end of the two-hour meeting by some in the audience who tried to steer the topic toward the hotly debated healthcare reform. A video of Scott’s response to their attempt to take over the meeting was circulated and replayed several weeks afterward on local and national television news.

A second meeting was scheduled in early November but was cancelled at the last minute because of the pending healthcare vote in the U.S. House of Representatives.

This time, Scott is ready to meet with about 120 people in the Downtown Conference Center at 9 a.m. to see how to speed up the project and to keep it moving forward, said Bill Osborne, city manager.

Those invited to attend will include city officials, representatives from Croy Engineering, the Georgia Department of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration, the Douglas County Chamber of Commerce, and the stakeholders – people who live in the area affected by the relocation.

Many of the participants have already confirmed their attendance, according to Marcia Hampton, director of community and downtown services for the city who will preside over the meeting.

City officials held several community information meetings in the last four months of 2009, along with a public information open house at Stewart Middle School in November to view a draft mitigation plan.

Osborne said Scott is trying to keep the pressure on those involved to keep the project going.

Mayor Mickey Thompson said he sees it as helping the city since Scott has committed to getting the federal dollars necessary to construct the project.

Thompson said it does no good for Scott to exert pressure on Washington to get the money if the city and other participants are not ready.

Ms. McCoy,

Please review the videotape of the first meeting and you'll hear Mr. Osborne indicating the primary purpose of the meeting was regarding the Hwy 92 project, however, there would be time at the end for other topics.

Where did you come up with "attempted takeover" comment????

Congressman Scott showed his true colors in that he lost his composure as was stated in another response!!!

Also, perhaps you may want to check into the Dville Police Chief's actions that same date. He did not allow videotaping of the meeting by private citizens~~~

What a crock of crap. Nothing like revisionist writing. All they are trying to do is put this project off again. They have been talking about doing this since I was a cop there in 1984. All talk, no action.

Ms. McCoy is a terrible and misinformed writer for this paper. I have read several of her articles and can not hold my tongue any longer.

The Representative is a coward, bought and paid for by pharmaceutical companies. He ignores the people in his district and I hope they vote him out this year!

Revisionist history?

Attendees were told that the Congressman would accept questions on other topics after all questions on Hwy 92 had been addressed.

There was no derailment, except for the Congressman's composure.
