Paulding schools had an abbreviated basketball schedule last week due to weather problems causing cancellations Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

With holiday tournaments and non-region play completed, the Hiram boys have the best record in the county and are tied for fifth place in Region 7AAAA.

The Hornets’ only two losses have been to teams in the top 10 in AAAA and they also have an impressive win over Campbell, a team ranked in the top 10 in AAAAA.

Hiram is now 12-2 overall and 2-1 in the region.

None of the other boys teams have a winning record, with the closest being South Paulding with a 7-7 record and a region record of 2-1.

According to Spartan coach Jamie Watkins, missed free throws have been one of the main reasons South Paulding lost several close games.

North Paulding has a 2-10 record and is 0-3 in the region while Paulding County is 1-8 and 0-3 in the region.

In Region 5AAAAA East Paulding is 4-9 on the year and 0-6 in the region.

The only girls team with a winning record at this point in the season is South Paulding, with a record of 8-6 and a region mark of 1-2.

The Lady Spartans have an impressive win over Douglas County, ranked in the top 10 in the state, and are tied for ninth in the region.

The Lady Hornets have the next best record at 6-8 overall and 0-3 in the region.

Last year, Hiram had only four wins and coach Michelle Caldwell is pleased with the progress being made by the team.

East Paulding is 4-9 on the year and 0-6 in region play, Paulding County is 3-8 overall and 0-3 in the region, while the newest county school, North Paulding, is 0-13 on the season and 0-3 in the region.

Six county teams were in action on Jan. 5, with only one pulling out a win.

The Lady Spartans beat Cedartown 52-37, with Porsha Martin having a big night with 22 points, seven steals and five rebounds.

Stormey Smith had 14 points and three steals, and Ashley Jetton contributed nine points, eight rebounds and eight steals.

In other girls action, Allatoona beat North Paulding 46-21 and Harrison defeated East Paulding 54-30.

In boys action, South Paulding lost to Cedartown 53-44, North Paulding lost to Allatoona 57-46 and East Paulding lost to Harrison 59-51.
