The Buchanan Dollar General received extensive damage after a 1991 Ford Taurus jumped the curb and crashed into the storefront Monday afternoon.

According to the Buchanan Police Report, at around 1:25 p.m. 70-year-old Marvin McEntyre of Buchanan meant to pull into a parking space and had a mechanical failure with the car’s brakes, which sent the car into the store.

Dollar General Manager Wanda Bott was in the back of the store when the accident occurred.

“When I heard it, I ran up to the front,” she said. “I just ran outside to check on the guy that ran into the store. I think I was concerned if he was hurt or not.”

Bott said she discovered McEntyre “in a daze, shocked, trying to get out of the car. His door was kind of lodged shut.”

The incident was difficult for Bott to put into words.

“It’s kind of hard to describe the feeling or emotion that you go through when you see something, hear something like that,” she said.

Although there were customers and employees in the store at the time of the accident, Bott said, “nobody was hurt.”

“It just kind of amazed them and shocked them.”

Some fixtures inside the store were damaged in addition to the outer wall and three windows.

As for the cost of damage, Bott said she’s heard estimates but does not have a total cost.

“I know one guy that was here boarding it up, his first response was about $18,000 to $20,000 [damage].”

Bott said she was unsure when the storefront would be totally fixed but thought that it would take around two weeks.

Buchanan Police also worked an auto accident involving three cars Monday at the intersection of Highway 27 and West Head Ave. According to the incident report, at around 8 a.m., a 1993 Honda Accord driven by Brittany Dunn pulled out in front of Jennifer Saxon’s 2003 Ford Explorer. The Explorer struck the Accord in the passenger side front door, which caused the Accord to spin around and hit a 2002 Dodge Durango stopped on the other side of the intersection and being driven by Sallie Richardson.

Four were taken for treatment at Higgins General Hospital in Bremen. One injury was coded on the report as serious. Due to hospital confidentiality purposes, the status of the injured parties could not be given to media once patients were released.
