Two Carrollton men died in a car accident Monday night after they turned left onto Highway 27 off of Mote Road, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

One of the men, Robert Lee Addison, 67, was driving his 2001 SL2 Saturn and the other man, Charles Junior Johnson, 59, of Carrollton was a passenger in the car.

When Addison made the left turn, another car traveling south on Highway 27 in the left lane struck the Saturn’s passenger side at about 9 p.m.

The second car, a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero Sport, was driven by 19-year-old Alexandra Marjorie Vick, 19, of Rome.

Vick, a student at the University of West Georgia, was returning to the campus from Rome when the accident occurred.

Carrollton Fire Department Capt. Bill Messer said the intersection where the accident occurred can be dangerous if drivers are not exercising caution.

“That is a difficult intersection because there is a divided median and limited visibility,” Messer said.

Addison was transported to Tanner Medical Center where he died later in the night.

Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.

Vick was also transported to Tanner Medical Center where she was treated for minor injuries and released.

After Georgia State Patrol and other emergency agencies arrived, troopers said the Southbound lanes on Highway 27 were closed for more than two hours.

“Both vehicles sustained extensive damage,” said Trooper Justin Howard. “There was a lot of debris around the area.”

In addition to clearing the cars and debris off of the road, the road was also closed for investigative purposes.

“The investigation is still ongoing,” Howard said. “We are hoping to conclude it by the end of this week.”

Addison, Johnson and Vick were wearing their seat belts and alcohol was not involved, Howard said, but it is still unclear whether speed was an issue.

However, Messer said speeding can be a problem on Highway 27.

“People have a tendency to drive faster than the limit, but I’m not sure if that was the situation in this case,” he said. “The need to exercise more caution.”

Though family members did arrive on the scene, Howard said they were quickly ushered to Tanner Medical Center where Addison, Johnson and Vick were immediately transported.

“There was a tremendous array of emotions,” Howard said. “Some are understanding, some are sad, some are angry. They just want to know what happened. We do the best we can to put all the details of the accident in the report.”

Messer said he hopes drivers will be more careful, especially at intersection like Mote Road and Highway 27.

“It’s easy to get caught up in your own time frame,” Messer said. “But you can’t sacrifice your safety to be on time to an appointment.”
