Bremen City Schools students who live out-of-district will have to pay more to continue attending school in the city school system when the 2010-11 school year begins.

At the Bremen Board of Education meeting Monday, Feb. 8, tuition for non-resident students was set at $1,350 per child for the 2010-11 school year, an increase of $100. Families with three or more children attending will be asked to pay $3,500 for the 2010-11 school year, an increase of $250.

According to Assistant Superintendent Janis Parrish every year at this time the board sets tuition rates for the next year, and increases are standard procedure.

Also at the meeting, the board selected three furlough days, which are once again being required by the state this year. Friday, Feb. 12, will be counted as a furlough day instead of the planned teacher work day, and students are already scheduled to have that day off. The snow day on Friday, Jan. 8, will also be counted as a furlough day. The final furlough day is planned for Thursday, June 3, and was initially scheduled as a post-planning day for teachers.

With the after-school program being in a deficit this year, Bremen Schools Financial Director Celia Edwards told the board that they are working to make the program more efficient by attributing salaries to other areas and examining the cost effectiveness of enrichment activities. The after-school program will receive some funding due to Title 1 students now participating in it.

Edwards also told the board that they are continuing to let parents know that reduced and free lunches are available for children if they meet certain qualifications. An application is on their Web site, www.bremencs.com, under the parents menu tab.

Four teachers were also honored at the meeting as the Teachers of the Year. They include Bremen High School’s Stephen Anderson, Bremen Middle School’s Karen Bar and Bremen Academy’s Sherri Boalch. The Bremen School System Teacher of the Year award went to Jones Elementary School’s Kay Hipps.

Every board member congratulated the teachers for their achievements as the teachers received plaques.

“Year after year, we see a new group of folks that come up here, designated as their school’s teacher of the year, and that is exciting because that just shows what a great bunch of educators we have with us in the schools. You’re among an elite group this year,” said Bremen Schools Board Of Education Chair Daryl Sellers.

In other news, Jim Winchester of Georgia Family Connection Coalition asked the board to continue to be the nonprofit organization’s fiscal agent. The Coalition is made up of 35 agencies in Haralson County and conducts community assessments. The board signed the third contract with the coalition for fiscal year 2011, beginning July 1.

Also at the meeting, the board voted to pay off its lease-purchase debt of $534,789 on Bremen Middle School’s athletic facility using Carroll County SPLOST funds.

The board decided to meet at a new time for the rest of the year to accommodate members’ work schedules. Board meetings will still be the second Monday of every month, but will begin at 6:30 p.m. The next Bremen Board of Education meeting is set for at 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 8.
