For the second time this season, basketball games in and around Paulding County were postponed due to snow and ice; however, these games last week held greater importance.

Saturday the Region 7-AAAA Tournament was scheduled to begin, but the snow made that impossible.

Even though the games over the weekend were postponed, the games on Feb. 9 were held as scheduled and gave each team one more chance to alter the seeding in the region tournament.

The 20-4 Hiram Hornets played on Feb. 9 against the 19-5 Cass Colonels, looking to seal their spot high atop the region.

The Hornets came away with a big 77-62 win, solidifying them as the second seed for the region tournament. Jared Spencer had 19 points and 15 rebounds.

The Hornets’ final regular-season record improved 21-4 and 11-3 in the region.

Tuesday, the Hornets faced Paulding County at Hiram High School.

The South Paulding Spartans were also in action Feb. 9, playing Hillgrove, ranked eighth in the state.

The Hawks came out on top 74-38, dropping the Spartans’ record to 12-13 on the season and 7-7 in the region.

The Spartans secured the No. 6 seed in the tournament, pitting them against Osborne, a team which they lost to earlier this season due to a late 3-point basket.

Feb. 9 also saw North Paulding fall to Murray County Chiefs 69-50.

With the loss, the Wolfpack became 3-21 on the season and 1-13 in the region.

The Wolfpack earned a No. 14 seed in the region tournament and will play Allatoona, a team they lost to twice this season.

The Paulding County Patriots took the court Feb. 9 against region opponent Sequoyah.

After four quarters of hard fought basketball, Sequoyah came out on top, 75-60.

With the loss, the Patriots’ final overall record became 1-21, 0-14 in the region.

The Patriots received the 15th seed in the region tournament and will play the No. 2 seed Hiram Hornets.

The East Paulding Raiders, who are in Region 5-AAAAA, played McEachern, losing 66-50. The Raiders fall to 4-20 on the season and 0-17 in the region.
