Westlake entered the game as the eighth ranked team in all of AAAAAA and they played like it early on, taking a 34-11 lead after the first quarter and a 55-42 halftime advantage.
DC began their comeback late in the second quarter after going down by 28 points and by the end of the third they were up, 69-66.
The Tigers continued to play toe-to-toe with their region opponent and came away with the five point victory.
“This team played their hearts out,” said DC coach Joby Boydstone. “We played with a lot of guts and showed great character. I could not be more proud of a group of guys as I am of them tonight.”
Justin Bridges led the comeback victory for DC with a game high 32 points. He scored all over, hitting shots inside and outside. He had 10 buckets, two 3-pointers, was 6-for-8 from the line, and also rebounded well.
Boydstone was most proud of Bridges’ vocal leadership on the court.
K’Ja Johnson also had a big night for DC, scoring 25 points. Jalen Thornton added 19.
Tevin Lightly, while not big on points, did a great job defensively at the post against a guy that was several inches bigger then himself.
Douglas County will now prepare for another region match Friday when they take on Tri-Cites on the road. Girls will begin at 6 p.m. and boys will follow.
