The Carrollton Junior High School swimming team improved five spots from last year to take second place at the 2013 Joe Gawrys Southeastern Middle School Swimming and Diving Championships at the Baylor School Natatorium on Saturday in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Carrollton tallied 392 team points, trailing only the host school, Baylor, which had 423. Bremen came in 28th place and Central finished 31st in the 47-team field.

Carrollton Bluefin coach David Weeks, along with fellow swim coaches Ryan Scroggin, Bert Barrow and April Benefield, were all pleased with their respective teams’ performances on Saturday.

“It was a chance for a lot of Bluefin swimmers to represent their schools at a top-quality meet. These swimmers are keeping Carroll County and the surrounding areas on the map in swimming,” Weeks said. “We hope swimming will continue to grow in our school systems.”

For Carrollton, Hanna Lee and Anna Naguszewski led the girls, while Donald Sener paced the boys’ squad.

Lee won two championships, recording the top finish in the 50-yard freestyle (26.09) and the 100 freestyle (56.02), while Naguszewski came in second in both the 200 freestyle (2:11.74) and 500 freestyle (5:46.37). Sener captured a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.00) and a fifth in the 50 freestyle (26.45).

Sener got help in the boys’ division from Trey Gresham, Tristan Empson and Andrew Shiver. Gresham had a fourth-place finish in the 100 freestyle and also took eighth in the 200 freestyle, while Empson was seventh in the 200 and 100 freestyle. Shiver finished fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:13.13) and seventh in the 100 backstroke (1:13.44).

Also making the finals for the girls was Sara Momtahan, who finished seventh in the 50 freestyle and eighth in the 100 freestyle, while Elizabeth Anthony took 12th in the 100 breaststroke. For the boys, Corey Hutton finished 15th in the 50 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke and Will Anthony finished 14th in the 100 breaststroke.

Carrollton also won two relays — one each for the girls and boys — with the girls’ quartet of Lee, Naguszewski, Momtahan and Ashley Todd winning the 200 freestyle relay and placing second in the 400 freestyle relay. The boys’ relay — Sener, Gresham, Empson and Shiver — claimed the championship in the 200 medley relay and fourth in the 200 freestyle relay.

Hutton, Anthony, Austin Griffies and Brantley Bearden also placed 11th in the 400 freestyle relay, while Todd, Anthony, Madelyn Miller and Katie Kent took 11th in the 200 medley relay.

Eighth-grader Jaycie Benefield led the Central squad to its first-ever points, finishing 14th the 100 freestyle. Benefield teamed up with her sister, Karlie Benefield, as well as Peyton Groves and Amelia Farmer, for a 12th-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay and a 13th-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay.

Rhyan Booth was the lone male swimmer for Central, and he finished 41st in the 50 freestyle out of 86 competitors.

Bremen was led Jacob Gurley, Joseph Law and Beau Barrow. Gurley finished seventh in the 100 butterfly, while Law finished 13th in the 100 freestyle and 14th in the 200 freestyle. Barrow also put points on the board for Bremen, finishing 10th in the 500 freestyle.
