Dr. O. E. Brannan, 90, of Cedartown, Ga., passed away Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at his residence.

He was born on March 30, 1922, in O’Neal’s Township Johnston County, N.C., a son of the late Bertie Maynard Brannan Sr. and Melba Whitley Brannan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two children, Robert William Brannan Sr. and Dr. Chip Roberson; his siblings, Bertie Lucile Shelley, Dr. B.M. “Bert” Brannan and William Ruffin Brannan.

Dr. Brannan was a graduate of Wake Forest University and the Emory School of Dentistry receiving his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1946. He was a member of Si Omega Dental Fraternity. Dr. Brannan was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving from 1943 to 1944 and 1955 to 1957. He attained the rank of Major and his assignments included 82nd Airborne, 307th Airborne Medical Battalion, where he served as a paratrooper with over 25 jumps and was the first “jumping” Dentist in the Army.

He began his Dental practice in 1946 in Carrollton, Ga., where he was a member of the original medical staff of Tanner Memorial Hospital of Carrollton. He served as 1st Executive Committeeman in charge of Dental Services. Dr. Brannan began his practice in Cedartown, Ga., after his military service was completed. He practiced until 1984 and following a brief retirement, resumed practicing dentistry until April 2008.

He was a member of Carroll Lodge No. 69 F. & A.M. for 66 years. Dr. Brannan was an avid sportsman. He was a founding member of Sunset Hills Golf & Country Club and of Little River Gun Club, both of Carrollton, Ga. Dr. Brannan was a member of the Fairview Baptist Church of Rockmart, Ga.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Wanda Leigh Daugherty Brannan of Cedartown, to whom he was married on Feb. 19, 1994; children: Mrs. Kathryn “Kathy” Love Brannan Howell and husband David, of Carrollton, Mr. Orice Edison “Eddie” Brannan Jr. and wife, Teresa of Carrollton, Mrs. Anne Mason and husband, Dick of Cedartown and Ms. Holly Brannan of Cedartown; daughters-in-law, Ms. Suzie Hamrick and Mrs. Teresa Roberson; sister-in-law, Mrs. Sally Brannan. A number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, in the Fairview Baptist Church of Rockmart with Dr. Tony Weaver and Dr. Calvin Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Cedartown with Military Honors by the U.S. Army Honor Guard. Pallbearers will include Dr. Bill Berry, Bill Bordynoski, Ron Campbell, Rufus Johnson, Tim Pilgrim, Josh Smith, Mark Smith and Randy Smith.

The family received friends Monday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home.
