Ahhh! The nights are getting cooler, and your garden is beginning to fade as fall approaches. Now that the heat of summer has taken its toll on your garden, there’s time to sit back, relax and enjoy some leisure time, right?

No way! It’s time to be thinking about getting that garden ready for a fall planting, or even for next spring. There’s always something to be done in the garden.

The Carroll County Master Gardeners are hosting a series of three workshops on Sept. 12, 19 and 26 at the Ag Center in Carrollton to share ideas for putting your garden beds to sleep for the winter or preparing them for the next growing season.

On Sept. 12, host David Weiner will be conducting interviews with seasoned Master Gardeners, who will be sharing their many years of gardening experience and giving you excellent advice on how to have a fantastic garden next spring by preparing for it now. You’ll hear interviews with eight Master Gardeners on Sept. 12, discussing subjects such as soil testing, mulching and watering, composting, dividing perennials, and cool season vegetables.

On Sept. 19, David Weiner will again conduct interviews with 10 Master Gardeners, with topics ranging from caring for ornamentals, gardening for wildlife, recycling in Carroll County, seed starting, plant propagation, building a greenhouse, and how to plant trees and shrubs. A special feature will be a presentation on useful gardening tools and how to use and take care of them. Come be a part of the audience and glean as much gardening wisdom as you are able.

On Sept. 26, Mr. Arty Shronce will help you make your garden look as beautiful in October as in April. Arty was a contributing photographer to The Garden in Autumn by New York Times columnist Allen Lacy. Mr. Shronce works at the Georgia Department of Agriculture, where he writes “Arty’s Garden” for the Market bulletin, as well as a weekly Q&A column for the website and newspapers. He will discuss how fall can be the most rewarding and beautiful time of the gardening year.

The workshops are free to the public, but RSVPs are requested. Seating will be limited to 80 guests. You may register for all three workshops, or each workshop individually if you are unable to attend the entire series. Call the Ag Center at 770-836-8546 to register and reserve your seat. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the program beginning at 7 p.m. and ending at 8:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served and there will be door prizes!

Now, there are no more excuses for not gardening year round. You’ll know exactly what to do and how to do it thanks to this program. But you can still find time to prop your feet on the porch railing and admire your beautiful garden any time of the year.
