Born in Carrollton, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Charles Kennon and Eleanor “Nell” (Mandeville) Henderson, also of Carrollton, and the granddaughter of the late Leroy Clifton and Caroline “Carrie” Louise (Richardson) Mandeville Sr.
A 1938 graduate of UGA, AB Journalism, she received a Rosenwald Fellowship to Ohio State. She was secretary to the president of West Georgia College. Kennon served as a Lt. in the WAVES (Navy) during WWII encrypting and decrypting messages for the Pacific Fleet; stationed in Charleston, S.C., and Pearl Harbor. She moved to South Carolina in 1946. Kennon was a real estate broker and co-owner of Patton Company Realtors, Mauldin, S.C., from 1972-1989. An active member of the Presbyterian Church in America, she and her late husband were missionaries to Japan in 1990-91. She moved to Rhode Island in 2002 to live with her daughter. She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Providence.
She is survived by her three daughters, Blair P Greene and husband Thomas B. Greene of Lincoln, R.I.; Jean P. Preston and husband Donald Kriss Preston of Huntsville Ala.; Susan P Hamersky and husband Kaarel B Hamersky of Woodland Hills, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, Juliette Patton Chan, Doug Greene, Adrienne Greene, Katy Preston McCann, Janice Preston Rush, David Preston, Tyler Preston, Stephanie Hamersky, Matthew Hamersky, Daniel Hamersky; five great-grandchildren; one nephew, Clifton Mandeville Henderson Jr. of Mobile, Ala.; two great-nephews and one great-great-nephew.
