• The recent writer to Rants & Raves, commenting on the new county commissioner and senator being unqualified for the jobs, had no idea what he was talking about. Both men are college graduates who have served in various preparation situations. One has two degrees and served his country for over 20 years in the military, going up in rank from a private to a lieutenant colonel. These men are pledged to serve the county to the best of their abilities. It’s a shame that someone would belittle them without knowing anything about them. There are plenty of politicians who need to be criticized, but to try to discourage those whose objectives are to do the right thing is very shortsighted.
• Rep. Cooke is adamantly in favor of carrying loaded guns to church, city council meetings, PTA, football games, yard sales, 4th of July parades, etc. Ask him why it would still be against the law to carry a gun into the state Capitol while he and his fellow legislators are meeting. Could it be the Insanity Clause?
• Accreditation is a rather easy word to spell. I seem to have a very difficult time finding the “d” in it. So many pronounce it “accredidation.” I just heard it again during Governor Deal’s news conference on his appointments to the DeKalb County school board!
• I would like to put in a word of praise and thanks for the woman who takes care of the Dyer Road convenience center. It is always very neat and clean when I go there and she is very helpful when I have questions about where to put something. I like the swap table and the safe steps to get to the top of the bins. Also, I would like to thank the road crew that finally filled in the pothole at the Spring Street entrance to the Neva Lomason Library. Keep up the good work, Carroll County and Carrollton city government.
• I read that Mike Dugan wants to abolish the state income tax. I suppose he want to replace it with a consumption (sales) tax as he said during his campaign. Doesn’t he know that a sales tax is a very regressive tax? Or is this just another indication of the Republicans favoring the rich at the expense of the middle and lower income groups?
