No charges have been filed yet against the Carrollton man believed to be responsible for his stepgrandson’s death Friday afternoon.

The victim in the shooting, 24-year-old Justin Myers of Carrollton, was pronounced dead at the scene in his grandmother’s home on Pleasant Hill Road.

Capt. Jeff Richards of Carroll County Sheriff’s Office said the two men were involved in a “very physical” altercation, ending when the step-grandfather allegedly shot Myers in the chest.

Police arrived shortly after noon on Friday, responding to a 911 call.

The stepgrandfather, James Randall Crawford, was at Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the fistfight.

Richards said the sheriff’s office has consulted with the district attorney’s office, and no formal charges had been brought against Crawford as of late Friday night. His name was not released.

Crawford, Richards said, is claiming self-defense.

The family has had “ongoing issues,” Richards said, and neighbors have complained of violent incidents occurring at the home in the past.

Dozens of friends and family members gathered outside the home Friday afternoon, consoling the victim’s mother and family.

Myers graduated from Villa Rica High School.

There were no drugs found at the scene, police said.

“It was just a typical grandparents’ house, with the grandson staying with them,” Richards said.

Myers is believed to have been shot with a rifle, Richards said, although that is unconfirmed. There was also a shotgun on the scene, he said.

One who Cares:

This is a heart breaking thing, yes, please pray for these families, this is not over it will be a long hard road. They will be held accountable for the choices that were made right or wrong. That is the main thing is, they made a choice now they will have to accept those choices, and it will be hard to forgive but you must, ask God to help these families deal with the loss, but also learn from it guns never solves an arguement. It should have not got to this point, I pray for the friends and families that are dealing with the loss but his choice got him killed, too soon, God had alot for him, this is not what God wanted, this young man had alot of potentual, I hate it that he had to die this way. God help these families.
