Not even a 33-point outburst from senior guard Mone’ Peoples was enough to take down Gulf South Conference rival Valdosta State on Thursday night.

The University of West Georgia senior shooting guard matched a career-high she set earlier in the year, but the Lady Blazers placed five scorers in double-figures offensively to hold on to the 81-76 decision at The Complex in Valdosta.

Peoples went 11-of-18 from the field, 6-of-11 from downtown and 5-of-8 from the charity stripe for her 33 points, as the Wolves (13-8, 7-6 GSC) nearly mounted a pair of comebacks during the second half.

Trailing 46-32 at halftime, UWG trimmed the deficit to one point with 12:10 remaining on a Peoples free throw, but the Lady Blazers (14-8, 7-7) — winners of four straight — countered with a 19-5 run to go up 73-58 with 6:24 to go in the game.

West Georgia battled back again, cutting it to five on a Peoples trey with 31 seconds left, but the Wolves ultimately ran out of time.

Along with Peoples’ huge night, Shakiyla McLin scored 11 for the Wolves and JaDechia Hill added 10 points and nine boards. Kourtnee Williams paced the Lady Blazers with 24 points.

Valdosta State men 71, West Georgia 60: The Wolves (7-14, 4-9) saw their losing streak slide to eight games, as the Blazers (15-7, 7-7) turned a 32-30 halftime edge into an 18-point advantage midway through the second half, forcing the visitors to play catch-up down the stretch.

West Georgia got the deficit down to seven points just under the two-minute mark, but wouldn’t get any closer the rest of the way.

UWG senior point guard Quincy Hill returned to the lineup after missing a game last week due to illness and scored a team-high 17 points in 36 minutes to lead the Wolves, while David Murray led three VSU scorers in double figures with 17 points.

West Georgia remains on the road for a 5 p.m. game at West Florida on Saturday.
