The Wolves (2-2) shot 0-of-13 from beyond the arc in the opening half and just 2-of-20 for the game, as they fell behind 34-19 at the break, with the Falcons (2-3) drilling 5-of-9 attempts from downtown during the opening 20 minutes of play.
West Georgia couldn’t get anything going offensively in the first half, hitting just 8-of-33 (24 percent) attempts from the field and going 3-of-8 (37.5 percent) from the charity stripe.
West Georgia would make its move in the second half, though.
UWG got the lead down to single digits on a Mone’ Peoples lay-up with 12:14 remaining. Peoples’ 3-pointer at the 4:10 mark cut the deficit down to two points at 53-51, but the Falcons answered behind a 15-of-17 (88 percent) effort from the charity stripe for the night, including an 8-for-8 clip in the final 2:10.
Montevallo’s Taylor Beverly led all scorers with 19 points, while Jacquelyn Thompson added 13 points off the bench and Alexsis Brown (11 points) and Trena Moore-Smith (10 points) also reached double-figures offensively for the Falcons.
Peoples paced the Wolves with 15 points, followed by former Villa Rica star JaDechia Hill, who had 12 points and six rebounds. Jerlisa Taylor rounded out UWG’s top performers with 11 points, six rebounds and six assists.
The Wolves return to action on Saturday at home against Morris in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
