Buck Freeman, left, and Carlos Fuller have a little fun Saturday following a meeting of the Aubrey Gilbert Detachment of the Marine Corps League Saturday in Carrollton. The two veterans served in the Battle of Iwo Jima along with Gilbert Detachment members Bill Head and Peck Mallory. The detachment honored the veterans in recognition of the anniversary of the Marines landing on the beaches of the island Feb. 19, 1945. In the 36-day battle in the Pacific, Americans suffered more than 26,000 casualties, including 6,800 dead. Of the 20,000 Japanesee on Iwo Jima only 1,083 survived. The island played a significant role for bombers, allowing them a place to stop and refuel. Fuller is a native of the Clem community and Freeman is from West Virginia. Other World War II veterans in the detachment include Jim Pack, Bill White, Frank Scott and Orin Whitman.
