The Bobcats successfully defended their title with a 45-14 victory to become back-to-back champions. For the second time in three years, AHS finished runner-up.
“We made them look a lot tougher than they are,” said Cougars coach Sean Moistner. “They are a good team but we did not wrestle at the level we needed to.”
The Cougars opened the tourney with a dominating 50-17 performance over Eagles Landing. Advancing to the quarterfinals, Alexander defeated Marist, 43-21. AHS met No. 2 seeded West Laurens in the semi-finals, and won a close contest, 36-28.
Gilmer took a similar road to the championship, defeating Lumpkin County, 49-12, in the opening round and then taking down Perry, 64-9, in the quarterfinals. The Bobcats took on the second place squad from AHS’s region in the semis, defeating Carrollton 44-27.
The Cougars opened the championship contest by taking a quick 3-0 lead when Maverick Way scored a 5-1 decision in the heavyweight division. Alexander went up 6-0 when Trae Green defeated his 106-pound opponent in a 6-0 shutout.
In the 113-pound contest, Bryce Hollomon lost a heartbreaking 3-period match by one point. After going down to Gilmer by 132, Roman Boylen stepped to the mat and took out his opponent in a 10-6 decision.
The Bobcats dominated the middle weights up to 170 where AHS’s DeAndre Sims stepped up and won a disqualification match after the Gilmer kid stalled five times. It would be Alexander’s final win.
They lost two close matches in the process including a Morgan Hollomon overtime loss at 138 and a one point loss by Cody Dickerson at 152.
“We got out hustled and out worked in some positions,” Moistner said. “This is the third time in the last four years that we have made the championship match. We just need to find a way to turn the corner.”
Green, Boylen and Sims went undefeated in the State Duals tourney.
Alexander will now start preparing for the State Traditionals in February. They will be in competition next weekend at the Whitewater Invitational.
