Senior Trae Green started the night on a good note for the Cougars, dominating his 106-pound match against Patrick Lachin. Green took a 7-0 lead after the first period and increased the lead to 11-0 by the end of the second period. As the third period drew to a close, Green picked up a near pin-fall, going up 17-1 for the tech fall. The win gave AHS a 5-0 lead.
“That kid Trae wrestles is not bad,” said Cougar coach Sean Moistner. “He is a returning state placer and Trae dominated the match.”
Bryce Hollomon kept up the pace for Alexander in the second match, competing at 113. After taking an 8-0 lead in the first period, Hollomon put Robson Ferreira on his back in the second for the six point victory. Hollomon gave AHS an 11-0 lead.
“Bryce stayed on the attack and stayed physical,” Moistner said. “He is doing the things that we ask him to do.”
Events took an unexpected turn at 120 when Cody Starnes lost a close 4-1 decision to South Paulding’s Noah Isley. Isley led 2-1 going into the final seconds of the match, forcing Starnes to take a chance, which backfired into two points for the Spartans.
At 126, South Paulding picked up another victory when Colin Preston pinned Torrance Saunders with just seconds remaining in the first period. Preston held a 4-1 lead before picking up the win and cutting the points deficit to two at 11-9.
Ryan Ashe got the Cougars back on the winning track at 132 when he dominated Jordan Miller. Ashe took a 6-0 lead in the first before picking up the pin to put AHS up 17-9.
In a very physical match at 138, senior Morgan Hollomon managed to edge out Michael Farmer in a 5-2 decision. Hollomon went up 2-0 in the first period and led 5-2 in the second. Both wrestles were gassed in the third, leading to no score for the two minutes. The Cougar lead extended to 11.
In a competitive match at 145, South Paulding’s Josh Haney managed to out-point Alexander’s Tony Johnson, 6-4. Haney led 2-1 after the first period and 4-2 after the second, picking up three points for the Spartans.
AHS senior Cody Dickerson scored take down after take down in his 152-pound match against Tre Foster. He led 8-3 after the first period and 16-6 after the second. An 18-7 score at the end of the third gave Dickerson a major decision for four points. Alexander now led 24-12.
At 160, Alexander’s O’Neal Thompson squared off with South Paulding’s Cameron Parker. Parker scored a takedown and a near-fall in the first period for a 5-0 lead. Parker dominated the second period, taking a 15-0 lead for the tech fall and five points.
Senior DeAndre Sims picked up the most lopsided victory of the match, dominating South Paulding’s Jacob Sledge 14-5 before picking up a second period pin. Sledge did what many wrestlers refused to do, which is go right at Sims and the 170-pound AHS grappler made him pay, giving up six points.
Spencer Grey picked up a forfeit victory at 182 for an AHS 36-17 lead.
At 195, Casey Cobb defeated Deon Evans by pin in the first period to give South Paulding their final points of the match.
Cainan McKinney (220) and Maverick Way (285) both picked up forfeit wins for AHS to conclude the contest.
The Cougars will be off until Feb. 2 when they head to LaGrange for the Region 5-AAAAA Championships.
