"Every single girl played the best they've played all season. Our back row, our defense was on point. They were ready for anything the other team threw at us. We were down 14-11 in the fifth set. All they had to get was one more point to win the whole thing. We called a timeout and said, 'Well this is it. We can roll over and die or believe in ourselves and fight.' The last thing we said to each other was that we believe in each other and we can do it," Carrollton coach Kasey Ausin said.
Down two sets to one, the Lady Trojans (26-8-1) took down the No. 7 team in the state, forcing a fifth set with a 25-12 win in the fourth set and taking the match-decider, 17-15.
"Sydney Needham served our last ball and got an ace — she served an ace on the match point. That was really huge, because the other team didn't give us anything all night. They weren't giving away points. So she stepped up to the plate. The pressure was on. The gym was so loud you couldn't hear anything. To have to serve with all that and get the ace was pretty incredible," Austin said. "Once the other team shanked the pass, it was pretty much Carrollton bum-rushed the court and we're still celebrating."
The eight teams reaching the quarterfinals will be re-seeded by the GHSA, with the higher seed hosting on Saturday at a time to be determined.
