While AHS was the only local team to stay in the same classification, they were not lucky when it came to their new region. Entering region play for the Lady Cougars this year will be Columbus, Fayette, LaGrange, Sandy Creek, Shaw, Carrollton, and Troup.
“These are all good ball teams,” said AHS girls coach Marcy Camp. “LaGrange, Sandy Creek, and Fayette always make it far it state.”
“I had a chance to see Fayette play over the summer and they are very good, quick, and disciplined,” she added. “I am also not looking forward to all the long travel games.”
The travel is something that the AHS football team had to get use to over the fall season. Many of the teams in the region are more than an hour drive away.
Despite the new region concerns, Camp is happy with who she is getting back this season, though she was sad to see Casey Peacock, Brooke Davidson, and Tika Slay depart last year.
Starters returning to the 2012-13 squad include Daijia Anderson and Brooke Nail.
Anderson, a senior, will take on a leadership role and will be a dominating inside player.
“She is very strong and can get everyone to go where they need to go,” Camp said. “She gets the team fired up and is also much more disciplined which was a concern in the past.”
Nail, only a sophomore, will be a scorer on the team, but can also take on other roles.
“She is a sneaky little think,” Camp said. “One game she will score 20 points and then the next she will only have four, but will come up with 12 steals..”
“Brooke is a team player, and does whatever we need her to do,” Camp added.
Also starting for AHS this season will be Molly Brown, a transfer student from Harvester Christian Academy.
Brown, a junior, has already shown leadership ability as a latecomer to the team. She scored 19 points against Villa Rica in a scrimmage game on Nov. 13.
“She scored 19 points and didn’t even play that well, which says a lot about her” Camp said. “She knows the game, knows the court, loves her teammates, and is a good student.”
“She is such a good kid and is a good example for others,” Camp added.
As for the other starter roles, Camp believes there is not a kid on the team that couldn’t fill a role.
Other girls vying for a starting job include Claudia Hester, Treasure Matthews, Rachel Robinson, Kaitlyn Massey, Brittany Edenfield, and Deanna Dorsey
Hester and Matthews got some varsity playing time last season but mostly played JV. The two girls give Alexander true point guards, something the team did not have last season. Brown can also play point.
Robinson is a shooting guard that can provide senior leadership and can make her presence known on the court, according to Camp.
Massey and Edenfield are not big girls, but Camp says they can play like it.
According to Camp, Dorsey made the most improvement over the offseason.
“She had a wonderful summer and came back in shape,” Camp said. “She went from a timid, apprehensive player last season to a stronger player this year.”
Dacia King will see time off the bench after coming back from a knee injury last season. She can shoot and provide solid defense.
With 10 potential starters on the team, Camp believes that this will be a good year for AHS basketball.
“A lot of teams will come in and underestimate us and we will win,” Camp said. “This a a drama free team which is half the battle. We are only going to get better.‘
Alexander opens their season against New Manchester on Saturday. Girls will open at 6 p.m. and boys will follow at 7:30 p.m.
