“Really, just a good, hard-fought game. They did a good job. Our guys hung in there and played pretty good. We’re still in the searching stage a little bit with who we’re going to play and how things are going to play out. I was proud of the effort. We played pretty well,” Trojan coach Tim Criswell said.
Senior forward Riley Criswell led Carrollton with 20 points, while senior point guard Javarious Jackson added 10 points and junior guard Malik Sheppard finished with nine points.
The Carrollton girls won a 59-38 contest to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Both squads return to action at Cedartown on Tuesday night, with the girls tipping at 6 p.m. and the boys to follow at 7:30 p.m.
In other prep basketball action from the weekend:
Gordon Lee girls 56, Bremen 51: The Lady Blue Devils (2-2) battled down to the final minute, but fell short of upending the Class A power on Saturday. Jordan Hill led Bremen with 20 points, followed by Kayleigh Medlin with 10, Jamia Johnson with nine and Kalia Johnson with eight.
Gordon Lee boys 51, Bremen 44: Trent McClure led the Blue Devils (0-3) with 14 points against the former Region 6-A foe on Saturday.
Haralson County girls 33, South Paulding 26: Skye Overby led the Rebelettes (2-3) with 11 points in the non-region home win Saturday night.
Oak Mountain girls 45, LaGrange Academy 40: The Lady Warriors (7-0) remained unbeaten on the year, with Jessi Fuller leading the way with 18 points, followed by McKena Lipham’s 16-point effort on Saturday.
LaGrange Academy boys 70, Oak Mountain 63: The Warriors (6-1) suffered their first loss of the year despite a standout effort from sophomore point guard Blake Mason, who finished with 26 points and eight assists with no turnovers. Wade Mason also posted double-figures offensively with 18 points.
Mt. Zion girls 40, Haralson County 27: On Friday, the Lady Eagles (3-0) used a strong second half to win a road contest at HC, getting a 16-point effort from Jennifer Bagby, while Jordan Crews and Alexis Jordan each scored eight points. Madison Horton led the Rebelettes with nine points.
The two teams will meet against on Tuesday night at Mt. Zion in a 6 p.m. tip.
Carrollton JV boys 68, Rome 38: Cooper Criswell led the Trojans (3-0) offensively, while Jarel Rowe added 14 points.
Rome 9th grade boys 59, Carrollton 48: Marshaun Farris scored 11 points to lead Carrollton (2-1), while Desmond Webb added eight.
South Paulding boys 71, Haralson County 40: The Rebels (1-4) were led by Jake Carnes with 17 points.
Holy Ground boys 53, Colonial Hills 46: The Stallions ended Colonial Hill’s unbeaten region streak on Friday night behind a 22-point performance from Chandler Dedman, while Blake Lee added 12 points and John Cocklereece dropped in 11.
And while the trio in double-figure scoring certainly helped, first-year HG coach Charles Jetmore said the defensive effort was the catalyst.
Along with his 22 points, Dedman also pulled down 20 rebounds, with Ian Parham and Tyler Hale each having seven caroms to their credit.
Colonial Hill JV boys 44, Holy Ground 43: After falling behind by double digits in the first half, the Stallions rallied back, only to have their effort fall just short with a missed 3-point attempt at the buzzer.
Prep Wrestling
The Central High School wrestling team finished in eighth place out of 13 teams at the MTXE Invitational at Lassiter High School on Saturday, getting a first-place, 4-0 finish from senior Jarrett Thomas at 160 pounds, including three pins.
Rounding out the Lions’ finishers were Simon Barber at 106 (1-2), Colton Kelly at 113 (0-3), Avery Ward at 120 (2-3), Timothy Duffey at 126 (2-2), Levi Huckeba at 152 (1-1), Joe Simpkins at 170 (2-2), Austin Folds at 182 (0-2), Kirey Thompson at 195 (1-3) and Aaron Smith at 220 (1-2).
Central coach Marcus Marenda said there was some top-level competition on hand, including Holy Innocents’, host Lassiter and Hillgrove, who took first through third place, respectively.
“Overall as a team, I saw a lot of positives with what we’re doing. We’re not giving up. We’re facing some elite competition and we’re not backing down from that. And that’s very good,” Marenda said. “There’s always room for improvement. Some small things that we’ve been working on, we’ve got to work to keep improving on them next week.”
College Basketball
Sharika Pennamon scored 18 points and Sha’Ron Forte added 16 to lead the West Georgia Technical College women’s basketball team to a 62-47 victory over Southern Union State Community College on Saturday afternoon at Oak Mountain Academy in Carrollton.
WGTC, playing its third game in as many days, led from the early minutes, as it improved to 3-10 on the year. Southern Union fell to 5-11.
Ta’Corria Mann pulled down a season-high 17 rebounds, while scoring five points. Of her 17 boards, 16 were defensive rebounds. Tierra Green led Southern Union with 14 points.
