Mike Broome, associate pastor of Carrollton First United Methodist Church, shares a laugh Saturday as he tries to figure out how to do the rings in a wedding ceremony between Donnie Penhale and Vicki Castro at the downtown Courthouse Cafe. Castro’s parents own the newly opened cafe where she works, and the couple decided to make it a family and community affair to get married there, all while hosting “Brunch With Santa.” Penhale served as Santa for the day and Castro took orders, delivered food and ran the cash register. The couple met at Jerry’s Country Kitchen where Castro was waiting tables and Penhale was a customer stopping by about once a month on his travels with the Southern Company. After a few months of stopping by, Penhale was mustering up the courage to ask Castro out on a date when she beat him to the punch. Castro slipped Penhale a piece of paper with her name and number and well, the rest is history. Broome said it was his most unique wedding. “It will be up to them to explain Santa and Mrs. Claus getting married today,” he said.
