And while Lady Trojan coach Shon Thomaston was pleased with the effort and happy to advance into the semifinals, he said the execution will have to get better if his ball club is going to bring home the desired hardware by week’s end.
“I don’t feel real clean about it. If a win can be ugly, that one was pretty bad,” Thomaston said. “I’m not happy with the way we executed on either end of the floor. Don’t get me wrong, I always appreciate wins, but in a certain way we lacked to get it done and we didn’t get the job done the way we prepared to get it done, the way we planned to get it done or the way we were supposed to get it done.”
Carrollton (6-0) scored the game’s first 25 points before Banneker guard Dereka Drayton connected on a 3-pointer with 3:44 left in the opening half. The host Lady Trojans led 29-9 at the break and blew the game open in the third quarter, outscoring Banneker, 22-4, to go up 51-13 heading into the six-minute fourth quarter.
Senior guard Kenyata Hendrix led Carrollton with 15 points and six rebounds, while junior forward Brooklyn Emory added 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals and sophomore guard Alecia North posted 11 points with three steals.
Rounding out the double-figure scorers for Carrollton was sophomore guard Faith Swint with 10 points, four steals and three assists. Sophomore forward Jasmine Gamble added eight points and four rebounds off the bench. Drayton led Banneker (1-8) with 11 points.
Carrollton moves on to face the winner of today’s Randolph-Clay/Riverdale quarterfinal matchup on Friday night at 7 in the semifinals.
Thomaston said the focus will have to be better come Friday if his team wants to be in the championship round on Saturday evening.
“This tournament has got too many good teams in it to think that we can play the way we played [Wednesday] and come out on top. It won’t happen,” Thomaston said. “You know, I watched [Greater Atlanta Christian] play earlier [Wednesday] and they are just an outstanding team. They play outstanding basketball. And these other teams are going to be the same way ... Like I said, happy to win the ball game, but at the same time, I also know that the execution that we played with [Wednesday] will not win another ball game in this tournament.”

Greater Atlanta Christian girls 68, Lithia Springs 50: Brianna Cummings led the Lady Spartans with 26 points, while Tashara Jones paced the Lady Lions with 25 points. GAC advances to Friday’s semifinals, where it will face the Monroe/Chapel Hill winner at 4 p.m. Lithia will play the loser of the Monroe/Chapel Hill affair at 4 p.m. on Friday at the East Carrollton Recreation Center.
