The Chapel Hill basketball teams split their games on the last day of the Carrollton Holiday Tournament Saturday. The Lady Panthers rolled over Riverdale 75-41 while the boys team fell behind early, came back late, but lost by two to Creekside, 60-58.

The Chapel Hill girls jumped out to a 33-15 lead in the first quarter and led 47-21 at the half. They went up 67-33 by the third quarter.

“We played aggressive and played better early in the game than we previously had,” said CHHS girls coach Scott Long. “We put together four straight solid periods and that is a step in the right direction.”

Kaneisha Mixon led the Lady Panthers with 22 points.

“She had a really good shooting night,” Long said. “She was able to turn her defense into offense.”

Earnicia Washington followed Mixon with 12 points and Ashley Chestnut added 10. Both Erica Jones and Brandy Dangerfield netted eight points each.

The Chapel Hill boys took on Creekside in the final day of the tourney.

Chapel Hill trailed 20-11 after the first quarter and 36-21 at the half. They managed to cut the deficit to 48-43 in the third quarter and one point in the fourth before falling by two.

“It was a real hard fought effort with a group of guys who were hungry,” said CHHS boys coach Lee Wilson. “We came out with more intensity and played better defense.”

“We put a lot of pressure on them in the second half and forced turnovers,” Wilson added. “The difference of the game was free throws. They had 24 and we had only four.”

Tim Wright led the Panthers with 14 points.

“He was consistent all night. He stayed under control which gave him the opportunity to score late in the game,” Wilson said.

Both Terrance Hughes and Brandan Beckford netted 11 points each. Beckford had three 3-pointers.

“Terrance was aggressive and played good defense in all four quarters,” Wilson said. “Brandan was patient on the floor and had his big 3’s all in the second half.”

Chapel HIll will be off for the Holidays but will return to action on Jan. 4 when they travel to Douglass for the team’s first region game. Tip-off for the girls will be 6 p.m. The boys will follow at 7:30 p.m.
